Turpan is located in one of the deepest places of the earth. Nearby Aydinkol Lake is about 154m below sealevel. Turpan is an old oasis in the north of Taklamakan Desert. The water from Tianshan Mountains makes this area very fertile. In the heat of the desert grapes are grown for the production of raisins.
I have always loved those popular Asian street markets, where you can find unknown fragrant impossible things, roots, plants, dried animals...
Here in Turpan you have a mix of chinese stuff and muslim bazaars, as this area is a border between these 2 worlds.
They are mentioned by that name as a formidable obstacle to cross in the classic novel 'Journey to the West' relating Xuan Zang's quest of Buddhist scriptures in the 7th century. The Bezeklik caves are in a gorge on the other side of this mountain.
As Turpan is mainly inhabitatet by Muslim people (Uygur) the wine, that is grown in and around Turpan, is not grown for the making of wine but for producing raisins. Turpan raisins are very sweet and a speciality which people know and cherish all over China.
You can see strange looking houses between the fields of grapes. This structure are made to dry the grapes into raisins. The holes in the wall have the prupose to let the wind into the room and circulate.
