URUMQI
The main city of the region is a big modern city, with broad avenues, big hotels, but not very charming. Anyway, is a good basecamp for many excursions around it (Heavenly Lake, Gaochang, Bizaklik...).
Is the farthest city from sea on Earth. There are excursions to the mountains, including the place where Russia, Kazakstan, Mongolia and China meet.

xiaomei's new Urumqi Page

Urumqi is one of China's more prosperous cities in the northwest.

A very dry place for me. But they do make an effort to develop the greener landscape of the city. Their precious water resource comes from Tian Shan.

Don't even think of getting to eat pork, I think the popular meat in their food diet is mutton.

Food:
- WuYi Market
- Abullah's Nan (taste better than pizza or hamburgers or bread; uses mutton oil)
- Most of them don't really know how to cook proper plain vegetarian dishes. So vegetarians will have a difficult time trying to enjoy their food in Urumqi. They like their vegetables to be hot, spicy, and oily, similar to Szechuan style of cooking. This is why Szechuan cooking is quite popular here also.
