This 4-star-hotel was certainly one of the best during my 4 week tour through Central Asia. The influence of former Holiday Inn can be seen everywhere. The rooms are spacious and clean.
A room on one of the top floors gives you a spectacular view over the city. Breakfast was very, very good: Western and Chinese style, good coffee as much as you want.
This is one of the best 5 star hotel located in the heart of Urumqi city at No.5, Xinhua Beilu with good views of the city. I enjoyed my stay in this hotel.
I spent one night in the characteristic tent of the local people beside the Lake Tian Qi. Those Muslims are very nice and they share their music with us inside the tent after our great supper.
about 100 yuen including the great supper
Extremely WARM feeling!
RASHIT'S YURT: (The name is pronounced 'ra-sheet') If you overnight up at the Heavenly Lake in Urumji, the place to stay is at Rashit's. He and his family own a place in a private cove far away from the hordes of day tripping Chinese. It's a bit of a hike but it is WELL worth it! The photo is of Rashit's nephew and my friend Bi Mei trying to feed the little 'pet' lamb...it will only be a pet for so long...as the Kazhaks raise their food...
I think it was 30 kuai a night including food. That's less than $6 Canadian and a little over $4 US. He can also help arrange for horse trekking and hikes.
The style of housing is Kazhak. There are carpets placed around a central hearth. Lots of pillows. At night, Rashit's wife will set up the blankets and pillows for each person. There is plenty of warmth. Very cozy. Not as clean as one might hope...but this IS CHINA after all...you get used to it.
2 Qingnian Road (a couple of hundred metres south of the junction with Laocheng Lu). / Tel (0995) 8521416/8522301 / Fax (0995) 8523262.
Dorms less than Y30, rooms Y100-300.
A popular place with backpackers, offering primitive three-bed dorms and smarter doubles. It's a useful place to be as John's Information Cafe is right opposite, and most of the donkey cart and minibus drivers hang around here. In the hot summer evenings, there are cheerful displays of local singing and dancing in the gardens round the back, which you can attend (and join in with) for a small entrance fee.
OASIS HOTEL41 Qingnian Lu, Turpan / Phone: 852 2491. Fax: 852 3348 / Airport Transfer : USD50 one way from hotel to airport / Train station Transfer : USD30 one way from hotel to train station / Jeep rental: Can be hired at the hotel.
Another ten minutes' walk north from the Yiyuan is the very pleasant Oasis (0995/522478; dorms less than ´30, rooms ´300-500). It has large grounds, with various facilities including post offices, travel agents, barbers and shops. They have 2 kind of rooms: some of them are decorated in 'Uygur Style' (see photo) and others ina more 'arabic way'. The only inconvenience here is that the hotel is quite a way from the bus station, which can make a difference in the 45ºC heat if you're on foot.
Long ago, I forget the price, but really cheap.
If you stay one or two night in Tianchi, try to live in this Xinjiang tents, it will be a good experience to you.
We stayed here twice. Doubles without bathrooms are Y60. The rooms are small and without A/C, but perfectly comfortable. There are several internet bars close by. If you need to go to the bus or train station, this hotel is not far from there. The rooms are very clean. The restaurant next door (to the right when you come out of the door) has good, cheap food.
