not many travellers travel out of urumqi when they go to xinjiang. there's this lake called bosten in heshuo county about 7hrs away by bus. it is commonly known as golden sands beach since it's surrounding 'beach' has golden coloured sands although the sand isn't fine. quite a nice place. they have speed boats to take you to some island in the lake although i couldn't quite see it.

"Restaurants along the Silk Road"
Lanzhou is famous for its beef noodles. You can order from most food stalls and restaurants. This small restaurant is just beside the west bus terminal. A big bowl of beef noodle + an egg only costs RMB1.50, very delicious and filling.
Beijing dumpling restaurant: opposite to the bus terminal at Jiayuguan. Dumplings are sold in weight, not by dish. 1 catty of dumpling(approx. 0.38kg)costs about RMB14. The dumplings in the photo weigh 1/2 catty only.
John’s Café at Dunhuang: Just beside the Feitian Hotel. It supplies western food and price is higher.
The night food stalls at Urumqi: you can try different kinds of food here.Roast mutton and beef, chicken in Sichuan style, roast fish, hot pot, roast corn…. It’s more crowded in the late hours.
One of the hot pot restaurants in Urumqi. A customer can choose his favorite food from the shelves and cook in a big pot of boiling soup. Each stick of food is RMB0.30.
The Semen restaurant at Kashi: Inside Semen Hotel. Food is tasty and price reasonable.
