Travel Tips for Dali
First Western Toilet
In Dali at the guesthouse we were staying was a great happening. First I didn't quite understand what is was all about, but that didn't take long. After a short while everyone in the guesthouse was talking about it; the guesthouse was to open the first western toilet in Dali! It was a wonderful party with good food and drinks, quite an experience!
I sadly didn't take a photo of this beautiful toilet.

This is a really nice cafè and restaurant in the old town.
It's not in the foreigner street so it's not that crowded and you can enjoy your meal or your drink while giving a look at their many travel books and magazines. They serve a really good espresso.
Dali Cangshan Mountain
Grab a seat on the chair lift and watch the locals scurry along the mountain side. The lower part of the mountain is actually a cemetary with all the mausoleums above ground. Notice that the lids of the mausoleums are transformed into planters and the locals come to groom the flowers and honour their ancestors.
After about an half hour, you're into the clouds. There is a temple here which is peaceful enough but a word of warning the monks (when I was there) were too hungry for donations for my liking.
Burn some incense and pray for world peace and harmony if you like. Then walk / hike along the trails. Be careful though, some parts of the trail is a little narrow and there can be a steep drop off. Use your own judgement.
