Yunnan has some of the cheapest places to stay in all of China - you can stay in a basic room with no bathroom for as low as RMB 5 per night. The question of whether you would want to do that is a separate one, but if you are on a budget you can stay and eat in Yunnan very cheaply.

I've also stayed a 4 star hotel in Fuyuan town (on the border with Guizhou) for RMB 60/night - that place was truly amazing. The reason it was so cheap then was because we were the first guests in the newly opened place (during Chinese New Year, 2007). But even the list price was only a couple hundred RMB. You might pay more in Kunming or the tourist areas in Li Jiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, etc., but if you look around, you can get by even there for very little money. Have fun!

Halfway Guest House: After first day's hike

After the first day of mountain hiking (six to eight hours), there's a cozy hostel. It accomodates about 40 guests a night, but during Lunar New Year, there were stories of 100 walkers packed in there.

Red Lantern Inn: Just a few steps away from the center

The main difference between this inn with the other guesthouses is the owner. He's a really nice, helpful & honest person. Their location is also good as it's really near to the Old Market Square (Sifang Jie). It's not a big place but very comfy.

They do reply your email & in English.

Thai Garden Hotel: there are some nice hotels over there.

Tai Garden Hotel is currently the best hotel in Jinghong city, Xishuangbanna. With 155 standard twin-bed rooms, 5 deluxe king-size bed rooms, 8 deluxe suites, business center, Western restaurant and Chinese restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court and conference rooms, it functions just completely to meet needs of different guests.

First Bend Inn: traditional courtyard accomodation

This is supposedly one of the city's best-preserved buildings. The courtyard is a cool place to hang out and the reception are very kind and will help you with anything.
Keep your door closed while hanging out in the courtyard as groups of Chinese tourists come through the building in the day and they seemed more interested in the inside state of our rooms than the ancient archicture. The bathrooms are not the best... but for the price it's a great place

The ZhaXi's Hotel in The Lugu Lake: Stay in The Lugu Lake

You can stay in the Zhaxi's Hotel in Lugu Lake , 30RMB one day. Zhaxi is the boss, and he will tell you many many funny stories about the Mosuo to you.

and in Lijiang, the average is 50RMB one day.it is expensive to stay in the old town of Lijiang. more cheeper to stay on the border of the old town.

Tibet hotel: Stylish tibetan building in Zhongdiang

Well located hotel, close to the restaurants, to the old town. Nice people stay there. Quiet. Confortable with hot water, large rooms.Hot drinking water, TV, large bathroom.

Many services, but not available: the cook was sick and the travel agency closed.

Shenghui Hotel: Original Pleasant Hotel in Dali

This 4 star hotel was fun for me because it was not your typical bland modern tourist hotel. A real effort was made in the decoration and layout of the buildings, inspired by the local architecture. Pointy decorated chinese roofs, pleasant courtyards add to the great experience of very modern and comfortable rooms, just like I describe in the tip above.

Moreover, this hotel is located within walking distance of old town Dali (5 mn).

Traditional-like architecture.
I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by our Chinese colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Typical 4-star hotel room

A typical 4-star hotel room in Yunnan is top quality, as good as you would get at a Best Western or even the Marriot in the US. As you can see in the picture, we had pristine clean beds, large rooms, large clean bathrooms with all the comfort a Westerner is used to. The TV even had one channel in English (mainly about business and economics in East Asia). Just remember to insert your card key in the appointed slot near the door so that you can operate the lights and other electrical appliances. And do not forget to brush your teeth with bottled water as, 4 star or not, no tap water is safe in China. Clean safe water is anyway provided in each of these rooms from a water dispenser.

Q: Advise re-travel itinerary "A friend and I will be going to Yunnan in mid-November for 2 weeks. Besides Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila, I hope to be..."

A: "Yunnan is amazing, I spent a week there, although most of my time was in Dali (4 days) Lijiang 1 day and Kunming the rest. Dali is very nice but perhaps not real..."
