Hotel of Yunnan Geological & Mining Ressources: The Hotel for Geologists in Kunming

This is not likely a hotel where you will end up, unless you have some business with the Yunnan Bureau of Geological & Mining Ressources... This 4 star hotel is where our meeting was held for a few days. It was very comfortable, the staff very friendly and overall a great experience.

It is in the Eastern suburbs, far from downtown, and therefore inconvenient for touring downtown Kunming. It is nearby a cute little Lake and dam (Baishahe I think) with a charming park associated with it.

I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by our Chinese colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Mojiang Jijin Hotel: Supposedly the best Hotel in Mojiang... burk!

We were told this was the best hotel in Mojiang, which is not a touristy town. Luckily, we only stayed one night in this ugly modern building (Mojiang is entirely made of ugly modern buildings). First it was very noisy, your authentic Chinese cheap hotel night, karaoke screams, phone calls in the middle of the night, pounding on the door included. I did not sleep well also because it was so hot; opening the window meant being deafened by the karaoke in the bar below, closing the window meant dying in the heat as the "air conditioning" unit did not work. Besides, the bathroom was dirty and we skipped showering that day.

I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by our Chinese colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Yunlong Hotel: Comfortable Tourist Hotel in Lijiang

This 3 star hotel is your classical tourist big modern hotel, nothing quaint about it, but it is comfortable. You do not get bothered by karaoke noises, and that is a definite plus. A friend of mine who was sick and stayed a day in our room said that when they cleaned the rooms they left the doors of all the rooms open for hours on end. Although nothing was reported to have been stolen, I would still not leave any valuable in my room.

It is located in the modern part of town on a big ugly boulevard which main quality is the amazing perspective on the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towards the North. It takes about 1/2 hour to walk to the old part of Lijiang. But taxis are cheap and will take you down there in 5 mn.

I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Yudong(Jade Cave) Hotel: Best Stay in Bingzhongluo

Kind boss and servants, clean quilts and new facilities. In fact, it's just open this year. And hot water, you can rarely find another hotel provides here in Bingzhongluo village.

Bargain price with all facilities a backpacker needs.
Price: 40RMB/Standard room.

Yinhu Hotel: Puzhehei, Qiubei County, Wenshan

Very basic even for a Chinese 3-star place. Insist on a room in the E-block overlooking the lake. The VIP rooms are worse than the standard rooms (and Y200 more expensive).
Y120/room/nt for standard. (Rack rate Y480)

Rooms damp, peeling plaster, woodwork, lino floors, lumpy solid beds (but good pillows). Bathroom OK, but the Karaoke/Massage place has an imported all-singing-all dancing enclosed "sauna shower" that is just superb! Pay for a foot massage and you get a free 30 minute shower..bliss after 7 hours in the car on a dusty road.
Std rooms have no AC or heating. A bit cold in January!

Located in Puzhehei "resort", so good or bad news depending upon your point of view. You can walk to Xianrendong village, Puzhehei village, and Guanyin cave. Get up early to see the mist swirling around the limestone crags.

Kai Wah Plaza International Hotel, Kunming City

This is one of the tallest best and most modern 5 star hotel in Kunming (capital city of Yunnan province), and it is conveniently located in the city along the major Beijing Road. The hotel is also located very near to the airport and railway station.

Questions and Answers

Q: Advise re-travel itinerary "A friend and I will be going to Yunnan in mid-November for 2 weeks. Besides Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila, I hope to be..."

A: "Yunnan is amazing, I spent a week there, although most of my time was in Dali (4 days) Lijiang 1 day and Kunming the rest. Dali is very nice but perhaps not real..."
