buying bikes in kunming

by chesley23

hi. my wife and i are coming to kunming in february next year. we want to buy a couple of bikes so that we can bike from kunming to laos and vietnam. we don't need the best bikes, just fairly good ones. is it possible to buy bikes easily in kunming? and also other accessories like panniers, helmets, etc. do you know if there are any places to buy used bikes second hand? also, do you know how much they cost? i have heard that biking is very popular in kunming. we are very excited to visit. thank you for any information you can give us! - chesley

RE: buying bikes in kunming

by velochine

My husband and I travelled by bike in China last year and the year before last.
Each time we bought the bikes there : first time in Suzhou, near Shanghai, second time in Xian : good enough GIANT mountain bikes cost about 700 yuan each. I have never been to Kunming, but since it is quite a big city, I would be very surprised if there was not at least one good bike shop there. Anyway travelling by bike in China is great ! Next month, we are going there again, intend to go biking in Sichuan or Guizhou.....
Good luck, happy cycling !

International Horticulture Expo

by victorwkf

This is one of the place you must visit in Kunming as the 2000 International Horticulture Expo was held here. There are plenty of beautiful flowers, monuments, trees etc, and you could catch the locals learning martial arts if you are here during Sunday.

Wing on a stick

by honurox

Chicken wing on a stick? why not. Sold just about every where for 3-4 RMB. You pick your own wing, the vendor will deep fry it while you wait. Once your wing is fried you can have you choose of topping, pepper, pepper, or hot pepper. I prefer my wing plane. It as convenient way to eat wings while walking and shopping. This way you get satisfying taste of wing, but not the inconvenience mess that comes with eat wings. Will KFC start serving their wings on a stick too?
These wings are not bad, and make a good snack while shopping or walking

'GuCheng ShengShi Tu'

by Sharrie

Right next to the waterwheel is this red stone mural which is called the 'GuCheng ShengShi Tu' - 'Prosperous World of Old Town'. The daily life of the people in their most prosperous era in history is depicted here. The DongBa culture & Naxi music are also depicted.

Yunnan Must : Rice Noodles Over the Bridge

by hooiluangoh about The Brothers Jiang

The noodle has a story behind. A man was hiding away in the forest to concentrate on his studies, in preparation for the emperor's examination. The wife took care to deliver his meals everyday from her kitchen in town, only to see the piping hot dishes turn cold when she finally got to where he was. She invented a combo-meal instead, which was a hot soup topped with a thick layer of oil so that the heat would not escape. She also prepared various types of meat, sliced so thin it would cook immediately when dipped in the hot soup. The meat was not cooked beforehand so that it would retain its tastefulness when it entered the mouth. The combo set also included various veges and rice noodles.

This is a chain restaurant. So the standards of hygiene is about there. And what it sells is the most reknown food in Yunnan - Cross Bridge Rice Noodles (guo qiao mi xian), although I think Rice noodles over the bridge is a better translation.

If you order the package above 10 yuan (there are 4 packages, 10, 20, 40, 60), then you get to sit in a nicer hall upstairs with a theme deco, and the quality of the ingredients are "upgraded" according to the price. For example, the 10 yuan package does not include a little condiment made of a kind of expensive mushrooms.

You get to choose if you want plain white rice noodles, or vinegared rice noodles which are bigger size (the noodles, not the serving), and has a yellow taint. Order the 20 yuan package, you get 2 things:

1) a little bowl of steamed chicken soup. the serving spoon is pea-sized. Cute for the first time. You'll swear the next time.
2) a set of " Rice Noodles Over the Bridge"

The noodles set comes in 3 portions:
1) The very hot chicken soup
2) The rice noodles
3) The numerous little plates of meat/seafood/vege, ranging from raw to cooked.

You will pour the plates of stuff into the soup, starting from the raw. Lastly, put the rice noodles.

Excellent Hong Kong Dim Sum in Kunming !!!

by hooiluangoh about Xianggang Xinguang Jiulou

The place is clean and quiet. Kind of high-class in its setting with a big aquarium and lots of dining rooms.

Excellent food. We ordered some dim sum (including prawn dumpling, durian pancake, peitan lean meat rice porridge) and an oyster sauce veg. All were VERY GOOD.

The tea (at RMB 5 per person) was lousy, worse than McDonald's coffee. Everything is good. Truly Cantonese.
