Jiu Xiang and Stone Forest

by iracubet

Does anyone know whether we could tour both JiuXiang caves and Stone forest in 1 day? We're thinking of hiring a cab (Rmb200-250??) to take us there and back?

It takes about 2 hours to get from Kunming to the Stone Forest, then about the entire morning to sightsee there. I was there from about 0730 to 1330. It should be possible to do both in 1 day. Do you speak Chinese?

Hi! Ellyse.

Thanks for the reply. Yes..I do speak chinese although I must say...I'm a little rusty! So, you are suggesting that I go to Stone Forest first then to Jiu Xiang? Or should I go the other way round? Which is a better plan? Someone else replied and said that a cab would cost me $400-500. Any chance of rm 300?

stone forest first, then jiuxiang. round trip is about 250 km.
for hiring a shabby mini van, may cost you rmb 300; for a cab, at least rmb 400; as you can be recognized as a foreigner, they might ask for more.
remember, you must comfirm with the driver that you go/back via highway, and the payment includes the toll for highway(rmb 35 one way).

Sorry, no idea if it'd be better doing either first over the other. I only went to the Stone Forest.

It is best first to go to the Stone Forest, because after 09:00 AM , it is become VERY busy (every day and special on holidays)

I when i say Busy i mean really busy...
There a lot of small paths, and sometimes you have to wait 15 minutes to pass...

Travel Tips for Kunming

The climate in Kunming...

by miro

The climate in Kunming is mild. In spring (February, March, and April) and autumn (August, September, and October), a wool sweater is recommended. The city has a cool summer and, while a shirt is enough for the day, a jacket is needed in early morning and evening. Elderly tourists should bring wool vests or wool sweaters. Rain gear is needed during this season. Winter is seldom cold in Kunming. However, tourists are advised to bring wool or heavy clothes or jackets.

Being one of the six biggest air terminals in China, Kunming has international airlines, linked with Singapore, Bangkok, Chiangmai, Yangon, Vientiane, Kuala Lumpur and Hongkong, and has forty domestic airlines as well. It also has railways reaching Hai Noi, the capital of Vietnam and cities of China and the highways radiating to all over the country.

a) The urban bus ticket is auto sell and fare is 1 yuan. Paying cash first and up from the front door and down from back door.
b) Few of drivers are good at English; it is a better way to show Chinese map or brief note written destination when foreign travelers take taxicab.

When you are eating at the restaurants in Kunming, remember to check whether you are entitled to the lucky draw coupons shown in the photo. You need to rub the shiny area with a coin to see whether you have won any prices.

Dongba Cultural Museum

What is the Dongba culture & characters?

Dongba shamans use the Dongba characters which basically are a living pictographic language still in use today. There are about 1400 Dongba characters. These characters are somewhat like those ancient Egyptian characters.

Local Tours

Yunnan Panda International Tour:

Kunming CITS:

I joined a local tour to Stone Forest due to the long distance from the city. If you can, try to hire a cab instead & don't join a local tour here. It's amazing the number of shopping stops the company will bring you to - 5 in 1 day! Not much time left for sightseeing at all!

Kunming's western fastfood

by hooiluangoh about de ke shi

Aside from KFC and McDonald's which everybody know what it tastes like, this is another fastfood restaurant.

I don't like the food so much however. The chips were cold, and the chicken pieces soggy.
