RE: night in kunming

It's pretty safe in all chinese cities as long as u are not too flamboyant with 24 carats diamond ring n rolex watches.I noticed u did not fill up where u are from on yr personal page.Don't worry u will be safe on VT's forum. It will help us to answer some of yr queries when we know yr origin,u know?

i was last in kunming last May and was strolling around the city centre and the night markets just like you plan to. There are always dodgy looking people in every city you go to and you know just from the area whether you feel safe or not, bt I felt fine in Kunming. It was really good fun in fact!

It is safe!
Usually foreigners will not be the objectives of robbers, coz robbers have more possibility to be caught by police if they rob foreigners.

I have never felt unsafe while strolling around at night, But i have some friends who were mugger. It seems if your an asian female alone at night you might be a bit more of a target than a typical loud western person
But like any where in the world you need to use common sense, and stay out of bad looking area's or dark ally's.
But I feel safer in Kunming at night than Down town Honolulu

Travel Tips for Kunming

Touching the Dragon's Gate

by victorwkf

If you have reached the Dragon's Gate (Longmen), you should touch the stone ball on top of the gate's entrance with both hands as it is supposed to bring you good luck according to the local customs.

Local Artist.

by Sharrie

This girl is amazing! She spent 6 years of her life learning how to draw & she'll draw anything for the tourists for only RMB2 (US$0.25) for each proverb. And on top of it all, she'll recite wonderful phrases & wishings while she was drawing. I thought that was such a wonderful experience!

Shopping for souvenirs in bulk

by hooiluangoh about Minorities craft

This is a little shop in the giant wholesale market called "Luosiwan Everyday Use Goods Teminal market" or "Luosiwan Riyong Pifa Shichang".

The shop sells various bags and pouches and letter boxes made by the minorities at both wholesale (> 5 pc) and retail price.

There are 26 ethnic minorities living in Yunnan, the most prominent ones being Bai (Dali), Yi (largest minorities population), Naxi (because of Lijiang), Tibetians (up in the mountains), and Dai (Xishuang Banna prefecture). The pouches which cost as little as RMB 1.5 (wholesale).

There are also dolls, hand-crafted wooden dolls dressed in ethnic costumes. Less than RMB 5 per item.

Over the Bridge Noodle's

by bhemak about The Brother's Jiang

The famous dish is the "Over the Brigde Noodles". It is filled with about 10 or 15 different things. Some veg, meats, fish, toufu, breading (?). I don't know. Most of it tasted good and it not to expensive (12Y).

Yunnan Must - just to see the architecture(1)

by hooiluangoh about Shi2 Ping2 Hui4 Guan3

I notice only the locals know about this secret beauty. It's unassuming from the outside, but inside, it is actually an old residence of a Qing Dynasty's academic, reburbished to its today's splendor.

This house is double-story, and is divided into 3 sections, ie 3 courtyards with buildings surrinding it to walk through. You may pick a dining room if you have 10 people to sit at such a large table, otherwise sitting in the "hallway" ie by the courtyard is also a good experience.

The food - authentic Yunnannese. The selection - vast. Bring someone who reads Chinese menu. Selection - vast. Clean. Fine dinnerware. Excellent service.

The ambience - Ancient Chinese. But nice surroundings and old pictures that show the state of the house before reburbishment, and its previous owner. Qi Guo Ji (Steamed Chicken Soup). It's an original Yunnannese dish.

Reservation is ESSENTIAL.

The Yunnanese have dinner at 6:30 to 7pm. So if you want a less crowded place, and less waiting time for your order, then pick 7:30pm.
