Slightly better than usual 4-star fare

Unlike the bland sterility and indistinguishable style of thousands of Chinese 4-star hotels, the Kunming Hotel is a little bit different.
The Stalinist tower-block is more attractive than many of the bland, sleek tower hotels in Kunming, and has been renovated in the last couple of years.
Rooms were very nice, but terribly hot and stuffy at night (but the window could be opened). Showers were good, but temperature changes from freezing to scalding were common if having a shower at "peak time" in the morning.
Expect to negotiate down from the Y600 to around Y500/night incl breakfast. Some tour operators can get better prices.

TV (with CNN), minibar, quick laundry service.

Unique Quality: The pool is closed (it was scrubbed off the hotel floor plan in the lobby). Huge banqueting, karaoke, dance,disco facility next door.
Western restaurant on mezzanine floor has expensive coffee but reasonable Chinese and Western food.

Travel agency is rather hopeless (contrary to what one guide book says).
Friendly reception and concierge staff.

The Hotel for Geologists in Kunming

This is not likely a hotel where you will end up, unless you have some business with the Yunnan Bureau of Geological & Mining Ressources... This 4 star hotel is where our meeting was held for a few days. It was very comfortable, the staff very friendly and overall a great experience.

It is in the Eastern suburbs, far from downtown, and therefore inconvenient for touring downtown Kunming. It is nearby a cute little Lake and dam (Baishahe I think) with a charming park associated with it. I am sorry I do not know the price for a night at this hotel! Our tour was organized by our Chinese colleagues and we never had to deal with paying hotel bills ourselves...

Malaysian Consulate in Kunming

I never had this feeling, but it was like seeing home again when I saw the Malaysian flag outside "Ying Hua Hotel" (tel:3165888), which is on the corner of Bai Ta Lu and Dong Feng Dong Lu (opposite Kunming Hotel, where the Thai Consulate is). That's where the Malaysian Consulate is.

Shopping for Pu'Er Tea

I have 2 questions:-

1. When and where is the Pu'er Tea Festival in 2010?
2. Can you recommend any good and honest tea shops in Kunming which offer quality Pu'er?

1. Pu'er Tea Festival will be held in Ning'er County, Yunnan Province during April 16--18, 2010.
2. Sorry, I have no idea about any good and honest tea shops in Kunming.

i got some good pu'er from the shop below Kunming hotel near the train station.
Lots of tea shops nevertheless around Kunming. You can also try your luck around Cui Hu (the Green lake).

You may ask to try tea before you buy, but I believe you have to speak some Chinese so they will know what you want. Not that difficult!

TQ Very Much. Do you the name of the shop. Any tea specialiaties including Brand? I'm half chinese myself. I have made flight reservations and am targetted to be in Kunming from 9-12 May 2010. I am also a drinker and collector of Pu'Er Tea.

i forgot the name. i like brown pu'erh cha with earth taste which is different than green ones and i usually buy this one, and then i just take more expensive ones in cake form and brick forms.

i rely on the tea shop advisors and usually they are honest.

maybe my friend will tell me about puerh brand, but need to ask him first.

Ten Run is a tea retail store which has a reasonable selection of tea, but I don't know if they have the very good quality.
I also bought tea at the supermarket (no need to bargain!) near Kunming city centre (the archways).
