by caprio68

Hello fellow travellers!

I will be arriving in Kunming within the next couple of weeks and was wondering if anybody who has been (or is currently residing) in Kunming knows of any foreigner (ie english speaking) church assembly?

Thanks for your help!

Travel Tips for Kunming

Kunming Newspapers

by hooiluangoh

Ever wonder how the locals read their newspapers ? There are newspaper boards enacted by the authorities on the road side. Huge panels about 30 feet long for some of them. And the papers are pasted on the panels. Locals just stand before the board and enjoy reading the daily news.

There is not a local English newspaper.

There are plenty local chinese newspapers they make your head spin about which is the proper one to buy. They cost 0.50 yuan each, but some vendors package 3 papers into one and sell them for 1 yuan per set. If you read chinese, then I recommend "Spring City Evening" - Chun Cheng Wan Bao, which seems like a popular local paper. The other equally popular one is "City News" - Du Shi Shi Bao.

Recommendation for "good paper" are all not local : Huan Qiou Shi Bao, Can Kao Xiao Xi, amd Nan Fang Zhou Muo.

There are a lot of advertisements on hospital treatments for all kinds of ailments. It makes you feel like you have found a saviour for whatever you are/are not suffering from. All of a sudden you find your health is lacking one or another.

Smoking Pipe

by hooiluangoh

The traditional "cigar" in Yunnan. About 1 meter long.

At first glance, I could never figure out what that was for.

This apparatus is one of the Yunnan's famous 18 strange things. (shi ba guai in Mandarin).

It's made of bamboo.

Sifang Jie (Square Market)

by Sharrie

Sifang Jie (Square Market): This is where most people gathered during the olden days for doing business & trading. Today, it's the place for tourists & locals to gather & enjoy a cup of coffee or beer & shop for local arts & crafts or souvenirs. A place to experience the clean air, clear running water & daily lifestyle of the people of Lijiang.

Old House Restaurant

by FreeCloud about Lao3 Fang2 Zi4 Jiu3 Lou2 (in Chinese)

The restaurant is a hidden gem, located in a small alley. As its name says, it is in an old house, a classical local courtyard architecture structure.

Public dinning hall is in the open air of the courtyard once you step into the restaurant. With an ever-spring weather in Kunming, unless it is raining, you can enjoy your meal under moonlight and star-light (who needs candles anyway now!).

If you want a private dinning room, there are plenty either on the first floor or the second. The courtyard is sort of typical Bai architecture style, a courtyard enclosed with a U-shape house (2-floor) on its three sides, and front entrance. Mushrooms! It has various types of mushroom dishes.

The crispy eggplant dish -cui4 pi2 qie2 zi4-Lou! :)- was good as well.

Green vegetables (ji1 mao2 cai4=chicken feather green leaf vegetable).

The typical local cousine tends to be hot and spicy, but you can ask to make your dishes mild or without any chilli pepper at all.

A Nordic cafe in Kunming

by hooiluangoh about Nordica

It can pass off as IKEA at first glance.

The coffee is slightly expensive at RMB 8 per cup, but is still reasonable if you consider the huge place they have to pay rental for. The cinnammon roll is quite special. It's like the chinese mantou but with cinnammon sprinkled all over it.
