What to do with an iPod?

by rachel_simhon

Hello VT Kunming friends,

My dilemma: I am a completely technology and gadget-averse person living in Guangzhou, but leaving for several months of travel through SE Asia in December, via Kunming. I was given (actually I ended up purchasing...long story...) a new Apple iPod MP3 player for my trip, but like I said, I completely don't like carrying these types of things ever, much less when I travel. It is a brilliant piece of equipment, brand new, never used, still in the box, holds photos, and I even have the receipt. I'll be travelling a lot on a budget, so I feel that this is too much the luxury. Is anybody else interested in taking it off my hands? I know it's a great thing to have when one travels, but I don't even own a mobile phone, so I certainly don't like carrying around something like that around. Any of you want some music to keep you company on your travels?

Cheers,
Rachel

If you're staying a few days in Kunming, try to post this at the camila hotel and neighboring establishments as they are frequented by travellers... good luck!

saludos,
Fernando

Gracias Fernando, I was actually thinking about that as well yesterday. Oh, and by the way, do you remember if the Lao consulate was in there, or in another hostel? I know that other SE Asian ones are located there, but I can't recall if Laos was one of them....

Thanks again!
Rachel

Hey Rachel, The Laos consulate is still inside the Camila Hotel/hostel... their dorms are often packed with travellers so it's a good place to meet like-minded ppl. Anyway, the hours of operation of the Laos consulate are a bit loose... you can actually show up a bit early to drop and pick your passport... sorry, but I can't recall the times.

BTW, if you are in a rush, they issue 15 day visas at the border no in days.

saludos,
Fernando

I meant to write "now in days"... just remember, the visa at the border is only good for 15 days... extending the visas in Laos costs $2 USD per day through the official office at Vientiane, more through an agency far from the capital.

suerte,
Fernando

PS: check out the trekking scene at Muang Sing... it's better then the trekking in Xishuanbana... also, check out Muang Ngoi Neua, a really relax spot in Nth Laos.

Travel Tips for Kunming

Shi Shan (West Mountain)

by vigi

One hour trekking up Shi Shan (West Mountain). The mountain is nice, not as tourist-trap as DianChi. Say lotsa nice flowersm trees, spinders (home of them) and evern a small green snake!

A bit disappointed that they blocked up the Dragon Gate, charging 20Yuan entrance fee to the area which is supposed to be a natural cultural reserved!

Cometas ( Papalotes ) / Kites

by elpariente

Here as throughout China there is a great love for kites and apart from what it is nice to see the sky with the movements they do and the high altitude that they reach it is interesting to see the gentlemen that handle them so serious and professionals

This local snack is yummy to black white & honey

by hooiluangoh about Roadside stalls

You can recognise it by its deep-frying wok, and the pieces of potato sitting on a steel net above the wok.

Note: it is deep-fried, not BBQ. The potato is smeared with some sauce, a mixture of furu (fermented beancurd) and doubianjiang(fermented bean sauce).

Then a handful of mint leaves + er gen (nobody likes it, but luckily its amount is relatively few, but do try it just to experience the taste, it has a "cooling" property to counter the "heat" from the deep-fried potatoes) + coriander + rosemary is tossed into the bag.

Chilli powder is an option you can do without if you prefer non-spicy snack. Get a RMB0.50 bag. It will do as an excellent afternoon snack. And it is vegetarian !

If you are not that ladylike, you can eat and walk at the same time.

Good Korean food (if you get tierd of chinese)

by honurox about Korean Food

Located near the Yunnan Normal University, in my opinion it is one of the nicer restaurants on a street lined with restaurants and cafes. The first thing you’ll notice is the cleanliness, and polite service. The food is decant and reasonable prices. Of course all the food is Korean. My favorite is the Bibimpap (pictured) A good deal it 10RMB ($1.20), the spicy pork and rice is also good at 15RMB. All meals come with 3 side of what ever they make that day. Always includes Kimchee, other sides include, fried lotus root, sweet potatoes ,bean spout and some other side that I don’t know the name of. There is seating down stairs, and plant of seats located up stairs. Ordering is very easy, the have large picture munu, so you can order (if you don’t speak Chinese or Korean) by the grunt and point method Service is always good, and the food is good. And no surprise there is always Korean student from the local university there Bibimbap

Noodles with traditional entertainment

by janeword

The Cammelia Hotel is a great budget accommodation. In autumn 2005 it was $23 a night for a single. In the hotel area there are a lot of other businesses, including a tourist-show restaurant. I didn't take the time to be sure the food was suitable for my food intolerances, and I wound up with a huge bowl of soup just swimming with green peppers. Oh, well, it was only $2.50, and I sat back and watched the show an left hungry. The next night I tried some of their special noodles, but they would never bring me a fork, and again I wound up leaving hungry.
