Hi all… I am moving to kunming for a year. I have lived in Beijing for 6 months and in Chengdu for others 6 months..
What the differences between Chengdu and Kunming? Wich city do u prefere? I’d like to have some information about kunming nightlife, thing to do in kunming, swimming pool, the people etc.. I have read that kunming is great… is it really as everybody says? I still do not understand why! I mean, I have understood that it is the eternal spring city, but I think that the weather is not the main and only reason for loving a city. The people is great? Can you tell me why u love so much kunming? Thank you for helping me to understand it.

I will be intereted to hear the answre to this question. I have 4 days vacation in July and want to go to Lijiang, but I will have to transit in Kunming. I'd like to know if Kunming is a fun place to stay for a day and night?

Hello Diego, I have been working and living in kunming for 4 years, i think i have falled in love with this lovely city. let me tell you the main reasons:
A.kunming is a middle scale city in china,about 3 million people living in the city.the place is not too big and not small, and life is convenient.the city construction is good, compare with most cities in china. i like to see some old buidings.
B.weather is important in south china.Especially in summer time.here in kunming,it is cool in summer time,so less sweat.
c. people in yunnan province are friendly and nice. i always feel that people here are honest.and thy are friendly to foreigners.
d. food here is delicious too.compare with chengdu, it is not too good.but compare with beijing, much better.
e.easy to see wonderful ethnic group culture in yunnan.there are 26 nationalities live in yunnan, you can feel splendid ethnic group culture here and beautiful scene.
f. night life here is not boring. it has nearly all activities that you see in other cities.
g. the life cost in kunming is really low.you can experience good quality life with lower price.

This is something that sprang up quite recently. If you are into the historic past or cultura of Yunnan, you may like to visit the sites indicated by these brown boards. The ancient "examination booth" in Yunnan University. In the past, exam candidates went into a booth for days to answer questions in their exam papers. These booths can still be seen in Yunnan University. It is called "Gong4 Yuan4".
Also not too far from the Nai Gu Stone Forest and the Big Stone Forest area, there is a 'forest' made of sand, with various hue of red, yellow, beige and white colors.
It is not the most convenient place to go. Most people may not have time to get to that far.

A good way to reach Kunming is by airplane. From big cities, you have several flights daily and, if you book in advance, you can buy a ticket for a very good price. I travelled from Shenzhen to Kunming with 40% off the normal fare.
When you are in West Hill (Xi Shan), don't forget to have lunch there at one of the farmers' home. The locals call them "Nong Jia Le", which means joy of farmer's family.
The lunch will cost RMB 4 per person irrespective of which home you go to. There are typically 10 types of dishes, ranging from meat to vege to cold entries, and a few types of staple (rice, corn, etc), and include a somewhat tasteless soy drink.
You are free to have a 2nd (and 3rd and 4th)serving for the dish you like most.
You can also lend them a helping hand by washing your bowls yourself (before you use them, that is)
Some restaurants offer farm stay.
It's an experience not to be missed. The cured tofu (fu zhu) is heaven.
The chilli tofu is also good.
For some reason yunnannese make the smoothest tofu.
The Chinese characters "Shi-Lin", mean stone forest, full of a viriety of naturally-formatted stones. This is the first spot when you enter into the park. Everyone takes photo shot here.
To take a one-day trip, it will cause you 100 RMB including local guide, transportation, lunch and ticket. Contact the counter in Hotel.
