    Best Location

    by

I read that this hostel is noisy with lots of drinking and smoking in the common room. So I decided to pay for one night first. It is quite noisy because of the traffic, restaurants, a KTV & hostel traffic but not terribly. They provide ear plugs in every room. The level of drinking & smoking seems ok too.

Our room & bathroom were very clean. The shower head in our bathroom unfortunately droops & water pressure is quite low. The consolation is the water is hot. They empty the dustbins daily but don't make beds. There is a tall towel rack (I used for drying clothes too) & a writing table with two chairs, a tv provided.

Wifi is very poor in the private rooms. So people sit in the corridor leading to the rooms where tables & chairs are placed. The management should really improve the wifi service. It often breaks too.

Chinese food served here is quite good although a bit expensive & too oily (like most places in China).

Very popular hostel so it is best to book ahead.

Unique Quality: Very central with lots of shopping malls, small supermrkets, shops and banks. Lots of eateries around. I was able to buy Yunnan's famous foodstuff there before flying home. 10 mins walk to Kunming Old Street, with stalls of local handicrafts. 20 mins walk to Yunnan Provincial Museum. Good advice from staff on travelling, transport & tourist spots. Very clean place. Many travellers from all over the world here so you will get interesting stories & advice if you make friends with them.

Directions: You will see the sign for The Hump very clearly near the arches of Jinmabiji Square.

    Hump Hostel

This was a real gem of a hostel. The staff at the hostel were really friendly and helpful. There was a great roof terrace which was a lovely place to relax. On the terrace was a table tennis set. There is also a pool table in the bar area which was free and the source of many tournaments with staff and travellers. Food was served in the hostel and was pretty good.

I planed to stay for a day and ended up staying for a week.

    On a budget in Kunming

    by

I stayed for two nights at 'The Hump Hostel' in Kunming. The hostel was basic, but clean and the showers were good here too. If I ever came back to Kunming I would stay here. It can be noisy; it's located on a leafy street near the centre of Kunming, but all around are popular bars and that's where the noise comes from.

    Unique Quality:
The downstairs of the hostel was spacious, the food and drinks were nice and well priced. They had internet and wifi.

Our room was long and narrow with wooden floors and basic beds. There was no storage to speak of, but this didn't matter because we never had anything to store anyway!

The Best Place to Stay for Insomnia

    by

If you're keen to party all night long and not sleep in Kunming then this is the place for you. There's always a hot party at the bar, even on weekdays. Hubby and myself only crashed in their parties since we put up at a place that was too quiet. We sneaked over to the Hump, got high on Tsingtaos (beer) and Salsa. Yes, if you need to know, we had loads of fun and danced, badly, to the capoeira beats churned out by a full-blooded Brazillian percussion band.

Unique Quality: We also popped in the Hump when it was quieter in the daytime, just to look at the antiquated 'Flying Tigers' posters, map and a framed leather Flight jacket. We also striked up a conversation with an Indian chappie who was highly proficient in Mandarin - he proceeded to tell us the whole history of the Tigers and about the dangerous flight route that covered Yunnan, the Himalayas and even India.

    China on the Cheap

    by

Located in the city centre, The Hump is the most popular destination for backpackers in Kunming. A traditional Bird & Flower market, banks, shopping malls, super markets and pubs are all within walking distance. A convenient city bus system supports your sightseeing in this beautiful city.

Unique Quality: Start your day with a simple breakfast in our spacious common room. In this common room, we have a bar, restaurant, satellite TV and a DVD player, so you can order drinks and food, or just enjoy music or a movie while taking a break. We also have the coolest roof garden in Kunming for travellers, including a pool table, table tennis, table soccer, a reading area with bean bags, and plenty of room to just chill out and soak up the sun. In the weekend, often wild parties drive people crazy and some travellers will share their musical talent with others.

Directions: Kunming airport - The Hump: Take bus #52 from the airport to Baita Road (6 stops) and switch to bus #62 at the same bus stop. Get off at Golden Horse Memorial Archway (2 stops).

    Fun flophouse

    by

With a couple of bars and a huge rooftop patio being the focal points, this place is a big ole' flophouse. Location is great. Beds are Y25. Some of the dorms have their own decks. The building is a new Yunnanese-style traditional building. I like the place, but it's definitely not for everyone. Newly re-opened after being closed for over a year due to some problems with sweet miss Mary Jane.
