Rent a bicycle
by srd130
For many of the places I visited in Yunnan, I rented a bicycle and drove away from the town in some random direction. Lijiang proved to be a great place for this aimless cycling.
There are many sites in which buses bring Lijiang tourists to visit. There are these popular sites, lakes, mountains, and people living the traditional Naxi life all within 20 kilometers of the new town.
In the new town there is a statue of the great Chairman Mao, here in this same square there are two backpacker restaurants which rent bicycles. I do not recall the price but it is about 20 yuan per day and the bicycles are of high quality. So when you see the Mao statue, the bikes will be outside in the square.
So just hop on a bicycle and go in some random direction, it always delivers me to an interesting place.
In this photo I ended up at a small river which is a religious site, about 15 kilometers from the new town.
A tour to the ancient town of SHUHE
by Tedsocoa
When you want to escape a bit from Lijiang, a trip to the ancient town of SHUHE is really interesting. It's only about 12 km away from Lijiang, so easily to be done by a taxy, of even on a bike. I could not find someone te rent me a bike, so I took a taxi.
At the main entrance of this small town, you have to buy a ticket for entrance - fee of 30 Yuan.
But a visit of Shuhe town is really worthwhile. Shuhe - town is situated at 2400 m. above see-level, so temperature can be a bit frech.
Tiger Leaping Gorge
by kpyam2000
One of the deepest gorges in the world. Getting to the gorge takes a 1.5 hour taxi ride. Cost RMB 180, but it's well worth it. Entry to the gorge itself is RMB 30 + RMB 2 for insurance against falling rocks.
Wow Factor = 4 out of 5.
Frescos

Supposedly this area is famous for its frescos. The one place we went to see them charged 30 yuan to get in, but there is another fee that they charged which is like a "cultural area fee"... you can pay it anywhere and it supposedly supports the locals, though they honestly get enough money from selling souvenirs or renting land to Chinese souvenir vendors/businesses that they probably don't need it. However, no other place we went to demanded this 80 yuan, so we decided not to go in... they wouldn't let us in unless we had that piece of paper. Anyway, be prepared, especially if you go to the monastery near Baisha, for them to ask for the paper or the 80 yuan (May 2008) that it costs.

I love the quietude of dawn
I'm grateful for the silent timeIn the misty dawn

As the inter-phased day and night
Leaves the sky aglow with residual light,
My hungry eyes take in the feast
That tells me most, by saying least.
A silent scene can stir the heart
With more power than mere words impart,
And leave you breathless,
standing still
Held captive
by your own free will.
