lijiang experts please help!

by hikingfanatic

Hi all, I have 5 or so days to spend in and around Lijiang in a few weeks and I am quite confused. I was planning to go from Lijiang to Wenhai and then hike 2 days in Tiger Leaping Gorge. My questions:

1. Is it better to go from Lijiang to the Gorge or from Wenhai to the Gorge?
1. is it going to be difficult for me to find a guide to go on the 2 day hike with me? I'd rather no go alone.
2. After my hike, can I go to Zhongdian or is that too far?

Thanks so much, all the articles/guidebooks are saying different things. Also if anyone has a better itinerary to suggest, I am very open!!!

I went to Yunnan this March/April but did not go to Wenhai. Firstly, I went to (from Kunming) Dali, Zongdian, then Deqin. Tiger Leaping Gorge was the next stop before proceeding to Jade Dragon Snow mountain. Lijiang was my last stop before going back to Kunming.

I guessed it is easy for you to get a guide in Tiger Leaping Gorge as the locals also willing to be your guide for a small fee. I engaged a lady from Chateau de Woody to be my guide for half a day. Just went down to the Gorge and back - no serious climbing etc.

As for guide at Wenhai, I got the following link which may be useful.

I stayed at an wonderful guesthouse in Lijiang and would recommend to you to try. It is called An Le Ju and very near to the Square!

Cheers!

Travel Tips for Lijiang

Have a lunch at Naxi Guesthouse!

by Bonobo2005

After an hour or 2 you will reach a village which is named Nuoyu (according to LP). It is a settlement of around 50 traditional houses and farms spread over a valley with dozens of layers of terraced farmfield and with the stunning backdrop of the mountains all around.

Since after here the 28 bends are coming up, better have a rest and some food! Naxi Family Guesthouse seems to get all the business, but there are signs to other places as well.

Naxi has one of the nicest buildings around and offers accommodation, food and drinks. English is quite reasonable with comes in handy if you have queries on the extensive menu! We ordered cold Cokes and a variety of vegetarian (wild mushrooms!) and meat dishes which was all very tasty and filling. Prices are at around USD1-2 per dish very reasonable.

Bus ride from Dali to Lijiang

by hooiluangoh

The biggest bus (Volvo) costs RMB 50. Non-smoking. Takes about 4 hours.

Don't fall asleep as the ride includes some of the most spectacular views of the surrounding area.

There are about 3 trips per day. The lastest (on this luxurious bus) is at 2:30pm. Just ask at any bus agent in the old town.

There are 2 other types of bus. They are smaller and allow smoking. They run at more frequent intervals.

do a daytrip on Lijiang

by tteehee

the Yulong (jade dragon) snow mountain daytrip we took, albeit mainstream, was overall pleasant.
the stops are the ff:
*YuLong (jade dragon) national park
- Yulong summit (snow capped at 4506 meters above sea level)
- glacier (was not very visible as it was covered by the snowfall the day before)
- Dry sea bed (actually was a lake)
- white water river (turquoise clear blue waters, terraces, pine trees all over, clear blue skies)
* ShuHe old town - see my related trip on tourist trap
* a knife factory which was basically one of those tourist shopping stops
* black dragon pool park (i thought this was a waste of time, but the park is centuries old, and very picturesque. the stroll was very pleasant. observe the bubbles in the lake, like the lake is farting. the bubbles come up because of the vibrations as the park is on a constantly moving fault line, but u cant feel it)

Jade Dragon snow mountain

by Angelife

Above the height of 4500 meters, you can find 19 marine glaciers extending to a width of 30 meters and approximately 100 meters in length. There are cable cars available in this resort that will bring you to a height of 4506 meters above sea level.

Entrance to the Jade dragon snow mountain area :40 yuan

Market

by Willettsworld

The main market is located right in the southern part of the old town and is quite some experience. As well as the everyday fruit and veg, you'll also find live animals for sale such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and even dogs in very small cages. There certainly isn't a shortage of food for sale here. More photo's can be found in one of my travelogues.
