Travel Tips for Lijiang

Stomachach medicine

by gigi_huang

Back pack Warm clothes, rain cloth, good walking shoes. Weather changes drastically there, meaning it's easy to catch a cold especially after you do a hiking for a whole day or take a bus for 9 hours. Bring some medicines for headache, stomachach, and some vitamines. as many films as possible, because you can't stop taking pictures. In Lijiang, you can easily buy films, but when you travel to countryside, it's not easy to find a proper store.

Fried Bee Larvae

by bpacker about Jiannan Chun Xiao Chi

Now, Hubby and I are big fans of Jerry Hopkins and since we've eaten the worst thing in the world (balut-preserved salted duck fetus), we've gained some of the super-hero immunity when it came to other disgusting stuff.

Steamed Silkworm ? I'll eat that ! Tequila with a Meal Worm? Let me chow it down! Fried Scorpion? Let me chew that sucker!

So when the Lijiang locals told me that they had bee larvae appetisers in a restaurant, I told them to bring it on. They did. The bee babies came deep fried with salt, pepper, msg and chilli powder. And from far, they looked like plump kernels of popcorn with large eyes. Only they tasted better. They were crisp, fatty and surprisingly, nutty-tasting. Hubby and I knocked each other chopsticks in an effort to grab the last larvae. I won.

Review: A distinctive, delicious taste. Some people say that the taste was redolent of honey but I didn't detect it at all.

Baisha Palacio / Palace

by elpariente

Baisha, is now just a small village, but it was the capital of the Naxi kingdom. We walked in the streets looking for their houses of Naxi architecture, souvenirs stalls and we entered the Palace Dabaoji , that we liked a lot.
It has gardens very cool and there are wooden buildings and temples of great beauty

Yu Shui Shan Zhai

by konniemario

Less touristy than most of the sites in Lijiang, our driver took us to one of the oldest town settlement. It's called Yu Shui Shan Zhai where you can find ponds where they grow Salmon. What I like about the place is that it's less crowded and have some nice sceneries, too.

An old town set in a new town

by SPW

"Room with a view"

In we drove through the countryside and modern city to our hotel, right at the entrance to the Old Town of Lijiang: it was like driving into a fairy tale.
There was a steram running past the hotel and a number of two storey timber buildings opposite, all with restaurants and shops opening on to a pedestrian way.
Our room looked out over the town to the surrounding mountains, and we watched in wonder as the light changed as the sun went down.

"A night on the town"

As evening fell, we ventured out into the Old Town.
Although very commercial, it is a charming town and the people are delightful, although there are now many Han Chinese taking over businesses from the Naxi ethnic minority.
The little streams running through the town mean that there are lots of bridges to cross to get to different streets and to enter some businesses.
The Naxi women sell candles to float down the streams while making a wish (and gather up the little trays at the other end, recycling in action)
Crowds of tourists, mainly Chinese, colour, noise from the night clubs and the singing competition, dancing, shops....great fun.

"The town by day"

By day, the Old Town was still geared to tourism, from men offering the opportunity to dress as tribesmen and be photographed with ponies to the Naxi women dancing in the central square, but the charm remained.
