Travel Tips for Lijiang

Don't take your rolling bag!

by John195123

I know many people like rolling bags and think they're just great. Don't bring it to Lijiang. You, like many others, will end up carrying it down the cobbled, crowded streets. Think it's safer? How strong is your grip? Are you prepared?

Four images.
Bring a backpack if you can. It'll make your trip here easier. If you haven't tried to carry a rolling bag a long way, here isn't really the place to learn. Aside from that, with the cheap wheels many companies use, if/when those break, what will you do?

Anyway, it's not an easy place to carry rolling bags. I saw more people carrying them than rolling them. Lijiang can be rainy, of course, like anywhere else... bring an umbrella or a rain coat. Nothing unusual needed here... maybe some Lomodel for the MSG... Buy the best you can. See my photo lessons on my homepage! -- --

Yak Meadow Yulong Mountain

by albaaust

We caught a bus and then a cable car ride to Yak meadow. The bus snakes along hairpin bends takes about an hour through magnificent scenery. Be prepared with your camera. The cable car ride takes about 20 minutes.

Yak meadow is called Ge –Zhanut -Gu in Naxi language. Ge means alp meadow, Zhan starlike distribution, and Gu place. Yak meadow is at an altitude of 3,700 metres. In spring and summer yaks are supposed to wander along the meadow and flowers in bloom. We were here in winter so there was none of that. There is a lamasery and a walkway about the main “mountain side” where you can view the main peaks of the mountain.

It will take about an hour to walk it. Be prepared with a thick coat if going in winter. There is not much to see so if you have other things to do I would avoid doing this in winter.

Baisha Village

by John195123

Baisha is a neat little village that has been transformed into a tourist town as far as souvenir-buying is concerned. It's somewhat sad, but it's still worth a visit, just don't expect that what you buy is really real Naxi goods. I've seen many of the same things billed at Yao goods and Xi'Anese goods and so on...

Baisha is a short drive from Lijiang- you can arrange a driver through your hotel or catch a bus (ask around). There are many places to eat as well.

Five images. More in the "Scenes From Baisha" travelogue

"Disney Land Chinese Style"

We landed at Lijiang airport in the middle of the night. Two transporter van brought us in about 45 minutes to our hotel (see tip). The next morning we had breakfast at Peter's, the day after at Ali Baba's (see tip). Lijiang is loved by the Chinese, so much is clear. It is a kind of venice, in the crowds it attracts. We saw it more like a Disney Land Chinese style - and there is nothing wrong with Disney Land.

The village has been rebuild after an earthquake and has lots of small canals. The buildings are all more or less the same style, the same lay out. And they're either shop, restaurant or inn. Commercialisation at its highest. And you have to pay an entrance fee of 80 rmb!

On the other hand, a 'normal' village would have been destroyed by these numbers of people. And we had a fine time, watching the people, bargaining, eating and walking the maze.
