5D/4N to Kunming + Lijiang (+ Shangri La?)
by micmik
Hi guys,
Am planning a trip to China over Easter - 22 Apr, and was wondering :
1) if 5D/4N to Kunming + Lijiang + Shangri La is too ambitious? (Presumably just half a day in Kunming and we are not planning to do any major trekking) Or 6D/4N? My 1st and last day will be spent on the plane (int'l and domestic)
2) what is the weather like in these 3 cities around then?
3) Is Banyan Tree all that good or just hyped up? Any more moderately-priced hotels just as fantastic - eg MGallery Songtsam (Accor Group)?
Tx all!!

Hן!
As for the itinerary:
- Kunming itself: 1 day is enough to visit the stone forest and the essentials of the city. There are things to do in and around Kunming for longer, but if you don't have much time you'd better move on.
- Dali: It's between Kunming and Lijiang, a charming town, with lake Er Hat nearby. You didn't mention Dali, but I wouldn't skip it, and dedicate 1 day for Dali.
- Lijiang: depends on what you want to do there, you can calculate the length of your stay: One day for the town itself; One day for outlying villages; One day for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: only worth it if the weather is nice and clear with no clouds; One day for the Leaping Tiger Gorge.
- Shangri La: You can continue there after Leaping Tiger Gorge (which is on the way from Lijiang to Shangri-La), spend 1 day and night there.
As for accomodation in Lijiang, we stayed in a nice hotel on Lion Hill and were happy there, but it was more expensive than average. Our cousins (also VT members) stayed in the Mujia Yuan Inn and were very satisfied; you can read their tip:

Enjoy Yunnan, it's absolutely beautiful!

Thanks Ilan.
I had intended to visit Dali initially, but it seems to take almost half a day to travel there by bus (even longer by train)? As such, instead of wasting time on the road given my time constraints - thought it best if I fly straight from Kunming to Lijiang :
Day 1 : arrive Kunming at 3pm. Walk around Kunming town.
Day 2 : morning flight to Diqing (Shangri La). Arrive at 9am. Walk around and spend 1 night.
Day 3 : after lunch, afternoon overland (?) transfer to Lijiang. (Anything to see enroute?) Walk around Lijiang town.
Day 4 : Snow Mountain/Black Dragon Pool
Day 5 : cycling around outlying villages
Day 6 : morning flight back from Lijiang to Kunming.
How does above look?
Few other questions :
- Any outdoor markets I should not miss when I'm there from a Thur-Tue?
- What will the weather be like in Shangri La / Lijiang like around end Apr?
Thanks!!
Travel Tips for Lijiang
Attractive One Day Trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge
by kayleelijiang
It is well-known Tiger Leaping Gorge is the most spectacular site in the lijiang area. Its name came from a legendary story about a hunter who was chasing a tiger,The tiger escaped by leaping over the river with the assistance of a large stone in the middle, thus the name 'Tiger Leaping Gorge'.
the gorge is divided into upper, middle, and lowerTiger Leaping Gorge. Its length is about 30kilometers(18.6miles)and the narrowest part of the gorge is about 30 meters(100feet).Its great depth is estimated to be over3,000meters(9,842feet).This area is actually the border for Zhongdian(now Shangri-la)and Lijiang.
How to get to the way ?
After breakfast, drive about 1 hour to shigu,Walking aroud the shigu town see the First Bend of Yangtzi River,Then drive about 1.5hours to the Tiger Leaping Gorge's park.on the way see some nice villages along the Yangtzi River then trekking the gorge about 5.2km for 1.5-2 hours,at last driver about 2 hours back to Lijiang.
This site is an absolute must to see .But,in the midst of its beauty if you fail to be careful. You should travel this area with other people, watch for falling rocks and take plenty of water.
Enjoy your trip.More inf. please contact me.
Visit the fields by Lijiang's Airport
by darthmilmo
On my way from the airport to Lijiang, I was delighted by the most beautiful rice fields i've seen in a while. There were even palms all over the place. It's a really nice view. So if you get a chance, rent a bike and head that way. Alternatively, if you have a driver, ask him/her to take you there to look at the fields.
Visit the Old Town District
by Andy_P_Chen
They call it the old town of Lijiang, the heart and soul of the regional zeitgeist. Artisans and people of other professions populate the tortuous and mazelike alleys that constitute the town boundaries. The fresh water system flowing around the town can provide quite a good musical background to the stroll.
At noon in the hub of Sifangjie the elders may gather and get into a fit of round-dancing, and any tourist is welcome to join in and sing along if you don't mind.
The funny thing is that all the public toilets are graded like hotels.
Beautiful Blue Moon Valley
by albaaust
This was the one place I did want to visit for its unusual scenery of rock formations against a beautiful mountain backdrop and it was gorgeous. The reason this place is called Blue Moon Valley is apparently at certain times of the year the moon shadow inverts and is reflected in the waters of the blue lake created by the Yulong river. The Valley is divided into four lakes Yue Lake, Mirrow Lake, Blue Lake and Tingtao Lake. For us the most interesting part of the lake is the rock formations.
We got here by luck mainly. As our bus travelled down from the cable car going to Yak Valley our little group of four (on the bus) got very excited as we crossed the bridge overlooking the area and so the bus driver obliged and let us off and we caught another similar bus from the car park area down from the bridge. Suggest you do the same. 20 Yuan
Shuhe Tibetan Monastery
by John195123
Inside Shuhe there is a Tibetan monastery, though supposedly you're only allowed in part of it- I guess unless you're part of a tour or something... pretty lame. Whatever the case, the endless stretch of prayer wheels sits in front of an odd scene- a glass window with chairs in it that look out on the courtyard- maybe for drinking tea, maybe for massage, I don't know. Anyway, they have decent bathrooms!
Five images.
