Quiet, Beautiful Hotel on the Hill

We stayed in Lion Hill Zen Garden Hotel for three nights, and were very satisfied.
The location on the hill overlooking the Old Town is beautiful, andan important advantage is that it is quiet at night, far enough from the noise of discos and karaoke bars in the Old Town center. Still, it's only a 5-7 min walk to the center, where all the action is.

The hotel rooms and grounds are beautifully laid out and well kept.
The service is extremely friendly, and they speak good English. There is free internet, and when we encountered some problems with the computer set for guests' use, they immediately offered to connect us to the hotel's reception laptop. We got the impression that the staff in Zen Garden Hotel really took care to make our stay pleasant. Each time we sat down in the hotel garden or one of its pretty sitting corners, free tea and fruit were served to us. During breakfast live traditional string instrument music was played.

Admittedly, this hotel is relatively expensive, and we saw other nice hotels, also on Lion Hill, which were cheaper. However, I would still recommend the Zen Garden Lion Hill Hotel for its great hospitality and atmosphere.

tiger leaping gorge trek in mid Nov

by zzhang000

We are interested in hiking the high trail of tiger leaping gorge from Qiaotou to Walnut Grove in mid Nov and would like to know more about the weather there. Is mid Nov still in the raining season? Is it necessary to hire a guide? Any info is welcome. Thanks.

The raining season in Yunnan is from July to September. The weather would be fine in November. But it will be snowing in Zhongdian from the end of November to February. I think it is Okay for you to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge in Mid Nov. it is 2~3 hours far away from Zhongdian by car.

My friends, who come from France, just finished their tour in North part of Yunnan on 29th Sep. They did a little bit Trekking in Tiger Leaping Gorge. They hire an English speaking guide who recommended by a tour website in Yunnan, named Yunnantourism. Their trip in North part of Yunnan sounds good.

Travel Tips for Lijiang

Naxi Dance

by vigi

After the orchastra performance, I took a look at the mural wall paintings, very impressive, unfortunately no photos allowed. Walked into the back yard, I found some Naxi women dancing in the traditional Naxi way. They gathered in a circle, swinging hands and kicking legs. Always the same steps and same music, nothing new. And they came to ask for "donation" after dancing, really "professional"!

Great Korean food

by Ines28 about Sakura Cafe

A very good place to go whenever you are hungry, they also have good breakfast and great pies (apple and strawberry), everything at reasonable prices. The setting is beautiful, there are tables directly at a small canal (okay, this is not too difficult to find in Lijiang!) and the atmosphere inside is very comfortable.
They also have a wide variety of local, italian, western and korean dishes, and they are all good! Our favourite dish was definitely the hot (in both ways) korean soup, don´t recall the name but think the other soups were served cold.

The Best Museum in Town (Dongba Cultural Museum)

by bpacker

While some folks may say this place is pretty and offers some of the finest views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, I beg to differ. Given the high admission fee (RMB60), it's not worth coming to this ISO9000 park unless:

1)You're a birder and you're here to look for the Yunnan Nuthatch and other feathered friends
2)You've never seen any of the Palace Parks in South Korea in Fall.
3)You're interested in the Dongba( Naxi Shamans) Culture.

Speaking of the Dongba Culture, the museum which houses the exhibits (ranging from scriptures, paintings, costumes to coins) lies at the far end of the park. The hieroglyphics on display were fascinating and left me wondering if they were a precursor to the written Han Chinese script.

In any case, the museum was the best thing about this park. If not, I would have placed Black Dragon Pool park would be put under the tourist trap category for its over-sanatised, manicured look of this garden, complete with recyclable bins.

Alternative: The view from the top of the Chinese Temple at the Old Town is just as gorgeous.

Lanterns

by John195123

Red lanterns adorn the doors of most every building in town, making for quite a beautiful scene, especially when they are lit at night. If you can get up high to see them, such as on the viewing deck of the Moon Inn, it's well worth it, but they make walking around at night very pleasant as well.

Two images.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - Highest Post Office

by Willettsworld

The cable car takes you from an altitude of 3356m to one of 4506m where's there's a small centre along with a few shops, restaurant and a small post office - the highest in all of China! I feel for the young guys working here as it's damn cold! You can buy a postcard and get a special postmark put on it to let people know that you've been all the way up here, even though you cheated by taking a cable car!
