If you're looking for an alternative accomodation to pricey joints in Lijiang Old Town, then try staying in this boutique hotel (Zheng Fu Cao Tang) in the ancient village of Su He.

Time is a little slower there. Grandparents sit with their charges on the streets, Naxi folk gallop their horses on the cobble-stone streets and women still fuss over their growing salads in the fields in the shadow of the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It's situated in a lane where there's no souvenir shops but residential houses.
It's the perfect antithesis to Lijiang Old Town's kitschy souvenir shops, blaring techno music and hordes of tourists who can't survive without a flag-toting guide .

Sure, the price is a little higher than average but it's still a fraction of the Banyan Tree ( located in the same area)and you're gauranteed every imaginable creature comfort in an authentic setting. Plus, service was excellent and the staff were genuinely friendly. One of them, named Ocean Swallow, reminded me to slap some SPF40's on my cheeks after she got sunburnt the day before and helped us plan for our trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge.
