West Lake
by Ujamaflip
West Lake is a fantastic freshwater lake by the city of Hangzhou. The lake covers an area of 2.25 square miles, and has many attractions and beautiful buildings around its circumferance. One of the best ways to see the lake is to take a boat tour. Alternatively trains can be taken around the lake.

"West Lake/Xihu"
This is THE spot in Hangzhou. Everyone heads there for its scenery. We were there in winter so we didn't see its masses of lotus blooms but the lake area was still beautiful. That is when it isn't too misty. We went there twice, each time for 3 days. On our first visit, we walked around parts of the lake in the evening. The whole place was very clean. The benches were all filled up and there were many people strolling around. It was very peaceful and soothing, even when we had to sit on a raised section of the pavement! On our 2nd visit, it was colder and the lake was misty until mid-afternoon. Since it was Saturday, there were crowds of people. A section of the bridge across the lake is closed to cars, so it was very pleasant cycling on it.
"Delicious Hangzhou food"
We tried some types of cuisine we didn't see in other places like this black glutinous rice in cute mini baskets. Cost 1 yuan. It was rather bland. Advertised as a kind of Fukienese food but although I am a Fukienese, I have never seen it before. We also saw steamed black corn, selling for just 1 yuan.
"Richly coloured Hangzhou"
Of all the places we visited, the colours of nature were most vivid in Hangzhou. Most probably because it has the best weather.
