Great location
The only thing I really liked about this hostel was its location - on the east bank of the West Lake and close to the main city district for shops and restaurants. The staff were OK but the single room I had was small with a bed wedged into a space on one side and a desk and chair on the other. That was it for Y120. I've stayed in far better places that are hotels that have been cheaper but, I suppose, Hangzhou is a very popular place and a bit on the well-to-do side of things.

Hostel by the Lake
It's an OK hostel and I stayed there twice this year (2008) but I doubt that I will stay there again. If you are on a real budget and sleeping in dorms it's great. Nice rooms, good facilities. If you are a single traveller you might want something a bit better.
As a single who usually stays in single rooms before and after a trip I would prefer to go to Elan Hotel for the same (or cheaper) price. Prices went up this year and it was cheaper for me to go to the hotel on my third trip to Hangzhou. The hotel rooms are far better than those at the hostel - and it can get very noisy if you are located on the lane side of the building - delivery and garbage trucks seemed to arrive at all hours of the night.
Facilities are good at the hostel, computer access and free computers, a nice bar and courtyard. DVD,s available or play you own.
Unique Quality: Very close to West Lake, very friendly and helpful staff.
