Historic Hotel by West Lake

Xihu State Guesthouse is a 5-star hotel located on the western banks of Inner West Lake (Xili Hu). What sets it apart from other West Lake hotels is that it has its own extensive grounds and beautiful gardens. Rooms are of good size and located in several buildings/villas scattered around its grounds. In-room facilities are pretty standard - television, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities. It has two restaurants (serving Chinese and Western cuisine - the Chinese one is particularly good), a teahouse by the lake and a pool. The hotel also has its own pier by the lake, and a yacht for hire. Prices are quite reasonable for a 5-star establishment - we stayed in one of the cheaper rooms for around RMB550 per night. Although the hotel is within walking distance to the parks on the western shore of West Lake, it is a bit isolated from the bars and restaurants on the eastern shore - take a taxi!

Unique Quality: Xihu State Guesthouse is a historic hotel with its own grounds right by West Lake. Every important foreign dignitary seems to have stayed here, as well as Mao Zedong himself. The hotel must be state-owned - its entrance remains guarded by the People's Liberation Army! They were mostly unintrusive though.
