Shanghai and where else?

by anoum

I shall be in China for 3 weeks, flying into & exiting from Shanghai. Besides Hangzhou, the water villages, Suzhou, Nanjing, Huangshan, where else can I go to? I am thinking of travelling by train.

Definitely go to Beijing and Xi'an. Both have tons of interesting historical sights to see.

I presume you mean you want to stay around this area and not wander all over China?
No mention of your sightseeing interests/preferences so I'll just recommend blind.
Yangzhou, Shaoxing, Zhenjiang, Wuxi, Anji (need to get there by bus), Putuoshan (need to get there by a combination of ferry and bus/train), Moganshan (need to get there by bus), Ningbo.

A small water town near Shanghai that is my favourite is Xitang. It's small, easy to get to, very beautiful and peaceful. i think it is much more enjoyable and relaxing than Suzhou and other more touristy water towns.

Also, there are very fast trains between Shanghai and Beijing that leave very often. It would be worth going to visit the capital.

Good luck.

Thanks for the list of names, Ellyse. I am going to look up on them.

Thanks, tigerstu77 and mikelisaanna for suggesting Beijing. I have thought about it and am still thinking about it!

What worries me is that it might be too cold for us (early Dec). My friends said that they were too cold to really enjoy themselves there. What they really wanted to do was to stay in the hotel and its warmth!

Re: Shanghai and where else?

Well, there might be very few places that could really be considered "warm" in December. I think you'd need to head down to Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan or Yunnan provinces!

Ellyse, yes, I have considered that too if we run out of places we want to visit in central China. I haven't the time to check out the places you suggested but I sure will! Thanks, once again.

China and Tokyo n00b questions.

by kennyf

Hi. My wife and I are working on our first trip to Japan and China. We arrive in Tokyo on May 9 and leave on the 14th, but we have no real plans for seeing Tokyo yet. On the 15th our guided China tour starts (we chose http://www.chinaspree.com/china-tour-package-itinerary.asp?tourType=0&tourID=2007001)
We have an extra day in Shanghai at the end, then returning to Dallas on the May 25th. All flights are arranged already, same goes for the hotels in China.

We have a couple of quick questions I was hoping you folks could provide answers to:
Tokyo:
-We plan to hit the imperial palace, Meiji Jingu Shrine, maybe take a cruise on the Sumida river, check out Akihabara, Ueno Park. What else is a “must see” in 3 days of roaming?
- Have not got a hotel yet. Was thinking of using Priceline’s “name your price” and see what that lands. Anyone have any real concerns with this other then not being able to pick exactly where you are staying?
- anyone have a cheap (around $130) hotel they want to mention. Needs to be comfortable and clean, near things worth seeing/doing. 3 stars maybe...
- we have not put much time into learning many Japanese phrases. How big a pain is this going to be?

China:
- What is the best method of carrying money? We used a Visa cash cards and travelers checks in Europe, not sure if this will work in China though.
- What is worth hitting up in Shanghai on our last day? We like temples, gardens, outdoors art that kind of thing.
- I have a Verizon treo 700W smartphone. Could I buy a data package in china and get my email on my phone?
- should we get any inoculations?

Thanks.

Your method for money in China should be fine.
Shanghai: Jade Buddha Temple, Yuyuan Garden, Yuyuan Bazaar, the Bund, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, art warehouses at 50 Moganshan Lu etc.

so a visa/mastercard cash card should be widely accepted? nice.

Thanks for the Shanghai tips.

Is the Verison phone a GSM phone? It will not work in China if it is not GSM. In Japan, I don't think anything but Japanese phones work. Japan and Korea are the only places I have been where GSM won't work.

You can use your Visa card in ATMs all over China and they have English menus. ATMs are hard to find in Japan and they usually don't have English menus. Just be sure to tell your credit card company that you are heading to Asia. Sometimes they will not allow foreign transactions if you don't have a history of foreign travel.

Forget Shanghai, go to Dalian instead! Everybody should go to Dalian!

Uh....how about Dalian?

Hangzhou and a lake

by bhemak

I only made a day trip to the city and then went on a Chinese tour. I had a friend to translate, but it still went by to quick and was a little confusing. The lake was great even with it misting.

This is one of the two greatest tourist sites to the Chinese, the other being Guilin in the south. It's got a lake, hills around it, and lot of people selling 'silk' umbrellas.
