West Lake Huangzhou & photography

by SandiM

We are arriving at SHA airport around 230pm from Canada and hope to grab one of those express buses outside the airport to go directly to Hangzhou Tourist hub on Huanglong Rd. Got the schedules already, so that's done. Trying to select a hotel around West Lake in Hangzhou but need to know this: which section of the lake is the most photogenic? West Lake is huge and we want to be up early in the morning to shoot some photos of the lake & pagodas and statuary (if any). So, which approach is best? that way i can select a hotel nearby to start from (oh and we also need to get to the West bus Station on Zijingang Rd around lunch to grab an express bus to Huangshan Mtn so that gives you an idea where we want to be around. The hotel choice is not as important as the west lake approach part). thanks!

I was in Hangzhou last October. I stayed in the east side where most of the hotels are located including Marriott. I walk along the side of the lake which was beautiful garden all the way to the north shore. There was long moon bridge and small Island walk ways. If you look north up the hill you will see a lone pagoda which was built about 700 years ago, I found a good trail just behind Ye Fei temple (Soong Dynasty hero) and walk up hill to reach the Temple it took me about 3 to 4 hrs but it was very nice secluded walk up hills. I don't know where is the West station, get a taxi.

Travel Tips for Hangzhou

Do as the locals: Have a cuppa!

by maria_hz

Whatever you do, when in Hangzhou you have to try one of the teahouses around the lake. Regardless of the time of year, this is one of my absolute favourite things to do.

Order a pot of tea (refills of water are included), some snacks and sit and enjoy for hours, either your company, your view of the lake or a book or magazine you brought along. The great thing about teahouses in China is that you are allowed to linger for as long as you want, to savour the tea, the moment and the atmosphere. No need to feel pressured to order some more so you can stay longer, here you can spend the whole afternoon with the same pot of tea leaves and good company.

There are lots of teahouses around the west lake, just pop into one and try your luck. Some have menus in English and/or pictures. My favourite is the Chatea by the Golden Buffalo (Nanshan Road).

West Lake: Huagang Park

by cheezecake_deli

Huagang Park ("Flower Harbour" Park) is located at the southwestern corner of West Lake, and is most famous for its ponds full of giant golden carp (koi). It also houses a peacock sanctuary, a peony garden, a crooked bridge, and a teahouse on a rocky hill. Closeby are Jiang's Villa and the Hongli Villa, now a hotel.
