Transportation

by 81traveller

Hi there.

Question 1
Are there many buses from Hangzhou to Shanghai at night? Our flight reaches Hangzhou airport at 10:30pm. I guess we may not be in time to catch the train. Or are there mini vans which can fit 5 of us all the way to our hotel in Shanghai? Cost wise?

Question 2
How many types of trains are there from Hangzhou to Shanghai? Maglev and D? Pros and cons?

Thank you.

I have caught the late bus from Hangzhou airport at about 12midnight after my flight arrived. If you are on Air Asia a Shanghai bus goes after arrival of the flight - anyone can catch the bus if you are at the airport on time.

There are plenty of trains but not at that time of night. You can get times at the following: http://www.chinahighlights.com/china-trains. I usually catch the fast train - more expensive but certainly quicker tho I have caught the regular train.

Don't have recent info about cars but I am sure you would be able to arrange one, friends paid about $120 for a one way trip last year but I don't know company etc so can't confirm that.

There are trains all day long. But the time you arrive is really not good. As the airport is far away from railway statioin, you have to cost more than one hour to get to it after you land on Hangzhou. There are tow train to Shanghai starting around 1:30, you can catch them.

There are many kinds of train between Hangzhou and Shanghai. The two trains mentioned above is K and normal one.

How many types of trains depends on when will you arrive there.
You won't see maglev train until a few years later.
If you arrive late Oct. you may be able to see the 350km/h high speed G trains. It's said that it will cut the trip from Hangzhou to Shanghai to 38 minutes.
If you arrive recently, then you will have only the so called D train. It will take about 2 hours.

I presume you're arriving on AirAsia? If so, the easiest way would be to take the shuttle bus that they provide for their passengers to get to Shanghai. It costs 100 RMB and goes to Huangpu long-distance bus station in Shanghai -- look on the AirAsia website for more details.

Travel Tips for Hangzhou

Longjing Tea

by mke1963

Long Jing, or Dragon's Well, tea is among the most expensive teas in the world and only grows in a very small area to the west of Hangzhou city.
The prime time for harvesting Longjing tea bushes is from early April to October, when the hand-picking process starts. The leaves will be hand-picked three or four times per month from each bush during that period, with each picker able to pick around half a kilogramme of fresh leaves daily. The best tea is said to come from the leaves picked in early April, at the very beginning of the season. That half a kilogramme of fresh leaves will create around 100 grammes of finished tea leaves after the leaves have been dried.
Long Jing tea is available everywhere in Hangzhou, but it may be best to buy from a reputable shop or dealer, as it may be a lot of money to pay fro crushed up Liptons!

Hangzhou Zoo

by SLLiew

It was in Hangzhou zoo that I first saw my first panda in China - its country of origin. Pandas are now found mainly in the wild in isolated parts of Sichuan where there are still bamboo forests around Chengdu and Woolong areas.

(For the record, saw my first pand in Washington DC zoo).

Hangzhou dongwuyuan (Hangzhou zoo) is located south of the West Lake. Most of the animals including the pandas are behind bars. Hopefully, new and better zoo enclosures andl living conditions will be added and improved quickly over time.
