I have stayed at this hotel 3 or 4 times between 2007 and 2010, usually for 1 - 2 days. Overall I have been pleased.
Service has been good, appropriate to the level of hotel. (This includes English language ability; although I have some elementary Chinese I did not have communication problems.)
Overall, the property was a little bit dated but in good repair.
The location is excellent for downtown activity, see notes below. The hotel includes both Western and Chinese restaurants.
Unique Quality: The hotel is in the center of downtown. Wulin Square, a big public park, is next door; other nearby attractions include the Hangzhou Theater and a club featuring a Chinese style "variety show" - song and dance numbers, magicians, solo singers, etc. - called the "Red House Inn". This club is not totally suited to non-Chinese speakers, but is a fun experience nonetheless if you want to see Chinese culture. A large downtown department store/shopping mall is also within walking distance, as are several good restaurants -- both Chinese and Western. It's not immediately adjacent to the West Lake tourist area, but a short cab ride away. Also, there is a shuttle bus service to Shanghai Pudong, based at an airline office 1 block away. So, lots of conveniences nearby. Also nearby is the "Hill Street Bar" restaurant, good Chinese and western food in an elegant setting -- although hard to find due to its location in an out of the way alley!
