Travel Tips for Hangzhou

Longjing Tea Plantation/ factory

by sunnywong

A nice break from the lake is the Longjing tea plantation area. Hidden away in the southwest corner of the lake are some secluded walks and the quaint village of Longjing. Longjing actually means "Dragon Well" in English and according to legend, the Dragon Well was discovered about 230AD. This fresh spring water encouraged the people of Hangzhou to develop their own distinct premium quality tea and thus Longjing tea was born as the finest quality tea now sought after worldwide.

A trip to the village of Longjing is a 30 minute cycle ride and most of the hotels in Hangzhou have bikes for hire. Tea terraces rise up on either side of the village and it's an interesting area to walk around and watch the locals at work handpicking the tea leaves.

The Long Bridge

by chatterley

The Long Bridge is not literally long, but was named as such according to the story of "The Butterfly Lovers" (Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai). In this love story, the lovers had to part on this bridge, but neither of them could bear to leave each other, they kept sending each other across the bridge, and both of them ended up walking quite a long distance. Awwww...isn't that romantic?

(The ending of this story is quite tragic though. They both died and transformed into a pair of butterflies....)

Mausoleum of General Yue Fei

by Willettsworld

Yue Fei (1103-1142) came from Tangyin in Xiangzhou of today's Henan Province. He was a great general famous for wars against the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). He was killed by Emperor Gaozong and Qin Hui because of his resolution in anti-Jin and anti-compromise actions. In 1162, the imperial court recognised the official position of Yue Fei and moved his remains to be buried here. The temple, here, was built around his tomb during the Song dynasty in 1221 but the existing buildings were rebuilt in 1715 in the Qing Dynasty and comprehensively repaired in 1979.
