Jiaxing is right between Hangzhou and Shanghai. You can get to either one by bus or train in an hour. You probably already know that though. I've passed through Jiaxing twice on bicycle; it seems like a nice medium sized town in its own right, if not a little sleepy.

My best recommendation is Xitang water village (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1d57/f2e9f/). Mission Impossible 3 was filmed there.

Thank you for your suggestions, I have been to both Hangzhou and Shanghai, I was looking for out of the way places, small towns. I will look into Xitang. Thanks again

Yes XiTang is nice. I went there about 2 months ago. You should understand that it is a "tourist town" though. It's quite interesting, but the purpose of visiting the town is to tour it.

Thanks, I was wondering if you have been to Xiangshan, I was there last summer, and would like to return for 3-4 days but am having trouble getting info on the net with regards to how to get there. When I went, I went with a group and left from Hangzhou. (prefer the busses to trains) Any info is greatly appreciated.

Elephant Hill, I presume?
Buses leave from Hangzhou's east long-distance bus station. I think there're departures approximately hourly 0800--1600.

I lived in Jiaxing in 2006 for three months. Yes, Hangzhou and Shanghai are both within an hour's busride, and they're definitely must-sees. (Hangzhou's West Lake is an unbelievably beautiful sight.) Also within close proximity are Wuzhen, Nanxun, and Suzhou. Nanxun is a really special treat, as it's an ancient canal town that isn't as well-known (read: touristy) as so many others. It's really awesome, and if you go, ask for Michael Wang as your tourguide. He is an engaging, brilliant young man who speaks beautifully and, because he grew up in Nanxun, he knows every little intimate detail about the place. Jiaxing is a great little college town, perfectly central in the Zhejiang province.
