I was told to take a bus at 7:45 from Xitang to Shanghai Train station in order to get my flight from Hongqiao at 14:25. Someone in another forum mentioned also a bus to Shanghai South Bus station - is this better than travelling to the Train station? Is there maybe even a bus from Xitang/Jiashan on Tuesdays leaving for Hongqiao Airport directly? Is it possible to get the bus ticket one day before or only on the day of departure. Thanks for your help!
I would definitely take the Shanghai South long-distance bus station option.
The area around Shanghai main long-distance bus station (which's where your first option would end up) is under construction and you won't be able to get any taxi there unless you walk for at least 10 mins along rather uneven/cracked pavements with too many people and touts.
Also, the taxi ride going from Shanghai South long-distance bus station is a couple of km shorter, so all the better.
Buying the bus ticket 1 day in advance should be fine. I don't think there's any direct bus for Xitang -- Hongqiao airport.
Great info, thanks for your quick reply! Do you possibly also know if this would be the same bus traveling first to South Bus station and then to Main bus station? Thus would we get off only 1 station before or would we need to take a completely different bus?
Are the long distance bus stations next to the railway stations or are these different locations? I only wonder because we planned to take the Monday morning train from SHA main station to Jiashan but if the area around SHA main train station is under construction as well, it might be better to leave from south train station, right?
No, I think different buses go to the main and South long-distance bus stations.
The South long-distance bus station is south of the South train station.
The main long-distance bus station is north of the main train station.
The area north of the main train station (ie where the main long-distance bus station is) is under construction, but the south side is unaffected so you could still take trains from there, no problem.

But I believe that if you come to Xitang, you must feel that, like Oliver to some extent, you are come to a world in which the all things, the houses, bridges, paths, courtyards, rooms, have been reduced. I’m wonder at the capacity that so many people can arrange their life so fine in the so narrow place here. This is my first impression when I came here.
It is the standard water region in South China!
So called “Chinese garden” is often a back garden of large household in southern China. Generally there are pavilions, booths, rockeries and fishponds in a small place. It is built very fine. Do you know “bonsai”? In my opinion, Chinese garden is a “landscape bonsai”.
Lanes are another peculiar sight of Xitang. Shipi lane on West street is the famous one. It is 68m long with an only 1mwidth, laid 216 pieces of stone blocks. When you have a walk through it and have a sight up, the sky becomes “One thread sky”.
They reminded me of the similar structure across the streets in Rothenburg, Germany (see corresponding page for comparison).
The sign says: 'To West Garden, and the Button Museum'.
