PLUS side: found empire hotel online. it's a convenient walk to the mtr although it felt far because we had kids with us. plus it was rainy season when we were there. staff was very accommodating, giving us directions, a map, helping us call for cabs. hotel is quite close to restaurants so we didn't have far to walk for our meals. airport bus was literally a hop and a skip away (just at the corner). i requested for, and got two double beds which we pushed together to make one enormous bed. kids slept with us and we needed the space so they won't fall off.

MINUS side: empire's street had a garbage dump and we'd have to pass by everyday. yuck. breakfast buffet choices were the same everyday so on the last two days, we ate out even if breakfast came with the room.

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Good location, but poor service.

Comparing Empire Hotel to Soho hotel i used to stay during my first trip I can say that the two things i really liked about this hotel were location and big comfortable bad. Everything else did lead to bad experience.
1. In the room was cold not because of AC turning on all the time when we left the room but because of the window that had holes. So we had to buy tape and tape all around the window glass. The next one person who stayed in that room should thank me for taping the window if the staff didn't take tape away. :)
2. The hotel room was kind of big enough (alot bigger than in Soho hotel) but it really needs repairs. On the ceiling were huge cracks.
3. The staff didn't really clean good.
4. In bathroom on the walls was rust.
Well for 10 days for standard room for two we paid 1100$. The hotel was not worth those money.
In room hotel provides with very slow blowing hair dryer, safe for money and documents (i really didnt understand how to use it and just carried everything in my bag), towels (looked like they changed them everyday but i am not sure), soap (that they only refilled when i wrote a note paper for the staff), shampoo, body lotion, razor, toothbrush with toothpaste, cotton pellet, bathrobe, slippers and still water for free.

Our First Family Trip to Hongkong

by james_beban

Hi Guys,

Me and my family planning to have a two weeks vacation this coming April 15 onwards. My questions are:

1. Where can i book the cheapest airline from manila to hong kong preferably promos ?
2. How much is the ticket for HK Disneyland for my 3 year old daughter ?
3. Is it safe for Filipinos to travel despite the hostage crisis incident in manila?

Thanks and God Bless,
James

hi.. for a first trip, yeah hongkong is perfect for me if u r an asian.... so many places to go even at night... for your question no. 1..the cheapest would be cebu pacific if you catch their promo, but april is summer and it is a peak season, so i dont think you can get promos by this time, maybe if you book earlier like last year you can get cheap tickets....(2) for the tickets on hk disney you can check online... (3) i can say its safe to travel for filipinos, i went there last june 2010 then oct. 2010.. they dont care.

i also suggest, try to visit the smx at sm mall of asia today there is travel expo from feb. 18-20.. all travel agency was there and most of airlines also join there.... it's perfect for your inquiries, you can choose and get diff. ideas for your vacation....goodluck!

last time we went there the ticket for kids is 250hkd. no worries for filipinos touring in HK. so far cebu pacific offers cheapest airfare mla - hk, though you may want to check on PAL online during pay day , they have payday promo fare...

As said, Cebu Pacific is likely the cheapest. Don't worry, you'll be fine in HK.

Besides Disneyland, Ocean park and Victoria peak are recommended.
Enjoy your time in Hongkong.

In answer to your safety concerns there are large numbers of Filipinos in Hong Kong and you will be perfectly safe using normal common sense. Hong KOng is not a particularly dangerous place. Enjoy your holiday.

Travel Tips for Hong Kong

Take the cable car up the Causeway. This is very much on the beaten path which just about every tourists doing it. No wonder, the view up here of the city of Hong Kong and Kowloon on the other side of the Harbour is phenomenal. It is something that will be stuck in your memory for a long time. Eating exotic Cantonese dishes in a great restaurant at Kowloon. It's delicious but don't try to find out what's in it. Ignorance is bliss.

Octopus Card

by strollingfish

Once you arrive in HK the first thing I recommend to do is to buy an Octopus Card which is an electronic payment card. It can be used in most public transports and convenience stores. You can buy the card at the airport or MTR stations with a deposit of HK$50. No need to worry about how much to buy. You can add value later at MTR stations. And when you go back return your card. You can get refunds of the remaining amount and the deposit. HK$7 will be charged if it's returned within 3 months.

For first-timers, definitely get to Victoria's Peak, Kowloon, Night Market, sample the night life and shop till you drop. But hey, that should be just your first day - HK is truly a city that never sleeps!

If you have a bit more time, head out of the core for some of the beaches and remote towns. ENJOY! I met up with some locals and as day became night, night became day. Dance - dance - dance. Non-stop bumpity-bump on the postage-stamp dance floor, but who cared?! We were drinkin' and groovin' and makin' whoopie!!

give me a shout first, the night scene in Central will give you a picture of Hong Kong straight away, i guess.... I really missed the food in Hong Kong when I went to England for studied. Not just the chinese food, i mean all sort of food from all over the world is here, well one thing you have believe me, the food in Hong Kong is much cheaper and much better than fish & chips in England!!!

Tram

by hkgirl

The Tram on the Hong Kong island is an interesting way of traveling around. It goes east to west along the north shore of the island (north of the Victoria Peak). It is really cheap and comes around a lot. The trams are usually crowded and it's hard to find a seat. Nevertheless, it's a favorite and almost a "must-see" activity for tourists who want to experience the old, colonial Hong Kong.
