Best Time to avoid Bad weather in Hong Kong

by manoftileSK

Hi Guys,

We used to hear that Typhoon XXX is hitting the Southern China, including Hong Kong and Phillipine.

i am planning a holiday to visit Hong Kong.

When is the usual time that Hong Kong will be normally hit by wet storm or typhoon?
Also, when is the wet and dry seasons in Hong Kong?

Many thanks in advance for your kind advice.

If you totally want to avoid the typhoon season, then go between Nov and May. Hong Kong very rarely gets a direct hit by typhoon, but still will be affected by it as it brings clouds and rains, and is usually quite sticky at those times.

Jan and Feb are the coldest months, and it is possible to see temperature falling below 15c, even cooler in the countryside, but maybe only for a few days though.

Typhoon season is in the summer around June to September. The recent typhoon - typhoon Megi was later than usual for a typhoon. It did not hit Hong Kong in the end it veered away.

The worst time of year to visit Hong Kong is around Chinese New Year - January/ February. It is cold and damp and everything starts to turn mouldy. The best time is autumn October, November. It's usually still warm and dry. Though to be honest it has gone a bit cool at the moment here.

Irene: I thought the damp and moldy weather happens in around March/April, when the weather is getting warmer and the humidity is usually very high. I remembered that years ago when I lived in hk, the wall would be so damp that you could see water droplets forming!

Jan is cold by hk standard. I've been back in Jan recent years and it wasn't really that bad in terms of dampness. But it might be rainy though.

Yes, Mim, the cold and damp time is around Chinese New Year and spring. It's also one of the main flu seasons. The hot damp season is summer - when it is like a sauna outside. Autumn is the most enjoyable time to be here.

Travel Tips for Hong Kong

Leaving your luggage at the airport

by blue_sky04

If you have a long transit in Hong Kong & you want to go around the city, you can leave your luggage at the LEFT LUGGAGE counter. The counter is located close to the arrival hall B, in the corner near the toilet. When you get out of the arrival hall, you should turn right.

it costs $35, for "within" 3 hours, and $50 for 3 - 24 hours per luggage.
The cost also varies depend on the size of the luggage.

...spend a few hours in Saikung. This cute little harbour village may have caught up with modern times, but it is still a relaxing little place. If you are keen on fresh fish dishes, this is the place to go, along the harbour front. There are great pubs, too. I used to live there for twenty years and couldn't list all my fond memories. The most outstanding was perhaps living in the country-side, i.e. PoLoChe, Saikung.

Hong Kong Tip

Victoria Peak, Stanley Market, the Temples and the night market in Kowloon. Nathan Road!! And a restaurant called Macau Restaurant, one block off Nathan Road where we had beef filets that were excellent.

Central-Mid-Levels Escalator at 800-metres long, the world’s longest covered escalator. The escalator runs one-way downhill from 6am to 10am, then uphill from 10.20am to midnight. Ride one of the world’s longest outdoor escalators! The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator climbs 800 metres from Connaught Road to Conduit Road, snaking steeply through high-rise neighbourhoods. To cater to the “escalator traffic”, intimate bars and restaurants serving international fare have recently sprung up along Staunton and Elgin streets- Hong Kong’s “SOHO”.
