One night in Hong Kong

by MikeG85

Hi

I'm going to be in Hong Kong for two days one night on 29-30th December. Its my first time in the city so if anyone's in town who wants to hang out, do some sightseeing, hit the bars etc then let me know. I just up for making the most of the 24 hours or so I have before my outward flight.
I've researched a lot of the tourist spots but would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions on what is 'must see'. And some tips on some cheap/cool places to drink would also be great.

Thanks!

Mike

in addition to the usual tourist places, you should head to Tsim Sha Tsui East, the promenade area by the harbour to view the Christmas lights at night.

I sure wouldn't waste my one night in Hong Kong (or any other major city where I had not yet been) by sitting INSIDE a bar; and yes, I do enjoy having a drink; but HK is great for walking the back streets up Nathan Road on Kowloon, where you can choose from among the little places to eat and drink, mingle with the local population, etc. and the endof the year as mentioned is very festive with lots of decorations and bargains!

Just off Nathan Road closer to the ferries are lots of little pubs and restaurants that the international crowd go for hanging out, which should be less expensive than on Hong Kong island.

I agree, I don't plan to waste any of my time in the city. I'm not even planning on booking a room, provided I can keep myself entertained during the early hours. (Which is when I anticipate having to find a bar)

Travel Tips for Hong Kong

The Lengendary Bruce Lee

by SLLiew

Bruce Lee is a legendary hero of martial arts in Hong Kong movie modern history.

His name has been immortalized by all avid kung fu movie goers around the world with his series popular movies that are seen not only in Asia but in North America and Europe.

His untimely death was a loss but Bruce Lee has inspired many others like Jackie Chan and Jet Li to follow his footstops in bringing Chinese martial arts not only to the film industry in East Asia but around the world.

A statue of Bruce Lee is a major attraction at the Avenue of Stars at Cultural Centre promenade overlooking Hong Kong Victoria harbour.

Never too far from home!

by arv1

One of my favourite things about Hong Kong was that I was able to contact home quite often. At most train terminals, there was free internet access which conveniently allowed me to send regular updates on what I was doing to family and friends.

I remember sitting at the airport trying to check my e-mail, I was unable to as the language was set to chinese, a language I can't speak, except to say thank you (tho-thay - please correct me if I'm wrong!!). Luckily, I recieved help from the kind man sitting on the computer next to me, after struggling for about 20 minutes!

Thats something I always remember... There are a lot of things I miss!! I miss:
the heat
the people
the shops!!
the scenery
and after i went to the Po Lon Monestary
the great veggie food!

Go to the Peak, cross the harbour using the Star Ferry, see the spectacular and unique night scene of Hong Kong from Kowloon, place a visit to the outlying islands by ferry and taste the Chinese (Cantonese) foods (especially seafood) in the restaurants.

HK at limited budget

by barbie_sunrise

you can enjoy even with limited budget. Every 8pm you can enjoy the light and sound show at the Harbor. Every Wednesday, there's a free entrance to most of the museum. You can enjoy and relax at most of the parks in Hong Kong like the Kowloon Park. There is a Tai-chi class in the morning on scheduled day of the week (sorry i forgot, not sure if tues and thurs). Better check the website at www.discoverhongkong.com You can also see almost the entire Hong Kong Island by riding at the tram. They have flat rate. There's a lot of places to see in Hong Kong. I planned to go back again. This time i'll try the winter season : )

Eyeglasses

by gloopgloop

If your eyeglasses gets dirty and you don't have anything to clean them with, then pop into any branch of opticans in HK and they will clean them for you for FREE.

You even bring your prescription from home and get some new glasses done cheaply.
