YWCA vs Newton Inn Hong Kong Island

by Weener

Hey

I have been quoted for a stay at either YWCA or Newton Inn hotel in Hong Kong Island. Can anyone suggest which would be best for location, convenience and value for money (they are approximately the same price in my quotation)

Thanks!

Are you taling about the YMCA Salisbury in Kowloon side?

If so I would definitely stay there. The reasons I like it are:
-Prime Tsim Sha Tsui location
-Lots of shops, malls and transportation nearby within walking distances (star ferry, mtr, buses)
-Lots of restaurants around, even if you are hungry at 2am!

In all honesty I wouldnt even consider going to the Newton Inn, especially if you have never been to Hong Kong before. The YMCA and area would definitely be more tourist accomadating. Just beware of the many tourist traps around that area! (e.g. DO NOT BUY ELECTRONICS IN THAT AREA)

Hello!

Thanks for the reply. The hotel in question is the YWCA Garden View International House, 1 MacDonnell Road, Hong Kong Island.

It has been suggested by my friends to stay in Hong Kong island rather than Kowloon.

Are you aware of this particular YWCA hotel?

Thank you!

Erica

YWCA vs Newton Inn, Hong Kong Island

by Confucius

I'm familiar with both hotels. The basic difference is that the YWCA is located near a quiet upscale residential district while Newton Inn is on a busy city street.
The major advantage of Newton Inn is its proximity to the Fortress Hill MTR station and Hong Kong Island tram. There are also plenty of dining and shopping options within short walking distance.
A stay at the YWCA allows you to escape the busy street life and be closer to the botanical gardens and Hong Kong Park. If you like taking long walks, then this is the ideal place for you. If not, then you just need to hop on the minibus to get down the hill.

Ahh okay, thats what I thought. The YMCA on Macdonnel Rd, 5 minutes walk from where I used to live !(i used to live on macdonnel rd)

Now that you mention that, i suggest the newton inn then. It is much closer to the MTR (subway system) and thus easier to get around.

The YMCA on macdonnel rd is located in a residential area. So its not a good choice.

Hope this helps!

Excellent, thanks to both of you, it looks like we will go for the Newton Inn after your recommendations !

I used to live in HK and have stayed at both. The Newton would be my choice for the reasons stated above, close to MTR, trams etc. Enjoy your trip

Does anyone have current contact information for this hotel? I emailed them at the address posted on www.newtoninn.com, but no one's responded. I don't know whether it's because the phone numbers/email addresses aren't current, or if they just plain don't care to answer.

Also, has anyone stayed here or have any pointers? Any reason why I should stay somewhere else?

Try this e-mail address for Newton Hotel:
newtonhk@newtonhk.com

and this phone number:
(852) 2807-2333

Newton Inn and Newton Hotel are owned by same management (Henderson) so either location can help you with booking Newton Inn.

I have stayed at Newton Hotel before. Its location is directly across the street from the Fortress Hill MTR station and it also has a tram stop nearby.

Thank you so much, Confucious! That is very helpful.

Which hotel is better?

by lozeges

hi

i will be visiting Hong Kong for the first time in a week and was just wondering which hotel is better, the YMCA international house in Kowloon or the Newton Inn in North Point on hong kong island?

Which would be more convienient in terms of shopping, sightseeing etc.

All comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

YMCA Salisbury is better for you

by Confucius

You should stay in Kowloon for your first trip to Hong Kong as a tourist. The YMCA International House is a safe choice in Yau Ma Tei and excellent for shopping at the markets around Mongkok, but not as convenient for tourism as the YMCA Salisbury which is right next to the Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui.
After you have gained some experience and orientation visiting Hong Kong then you can move to Newton Inn at North Point on Hong Kong Island, which is located directly across the street from Fortress Hill MTR station.

I think YMCA Int'l is fine if they cut their rates as the other hotels in this period. I know some hotels cutting rates quite low from June to Auguest. On Kimberley Road, near Tsimshatsui East which is more close to the Hong Kong Museum of History, Science Museum and railway terminal than YMCA, there's a 4-star hotel offering HK$280 through agency

the YMCA in TST should be a choice for a first time visitor. WELCOME TO HK!!!! : )

Re: Re: Which hotel is better?

Thanks guys YMCA it is then, they have got some promos going on.

Plus i found some reviews on a hotel booking website which said the Newton Inn is in the middle of a market and when you step out of the building you're immediately confronted with strong fishy smells!

Re: Re: Which hotel is better?

If you stay in North Point you can see what ordinary people do on a ordinary day - but for your requirements like shopping and sightseeing, YMCA is definitely the choice.

Re: Which hotel is better?

I will suggest YMCA in TST. Located at the centre of shopping and main transport, If you are lucky, you may get a harbourview room.

Re: Re: Which hotel is better?

by vividvivian

well, both are good but depends on what you take, Newton Inn, very close to market and you have to get ready to hear the noise in the morning but true, close to local people and see how people live their lives. and i think the price is much lower than YMCA, right? once you pick Newton Inn, surely you know that you are really not in Tourist point. so if shopping is your first choice, i dun think this will be a good location. YMCA locates at the center of Hong Kong, high accessibility, easy to shop, visit, and for fun. anyway, bon voyage!!
