Budget Hostels

by Xtianology

Kung Hei Fat Choi!
Will be visiting Hong Kong again for the nth time this March. I usually stay at the Causeway Bay area but would like to try other "not-so-metropolitan" locations. Any recommendations to affordable and safe hostels with a fun, accommodating feel for backpackers? Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming that you are traveling alone? I would say it's better to meet up other backpackers first in a "metropolitan" area, as that's where most people go. If you are able to find a couple of other people to join you, then you can either book a rental house or a hostel that is on the outlying islands. http://eng.yha.org.hk/index.asp?lan=en Note that some of these locations are isolated and I wouldn't recommend you to go on your own.

Travel Tips for Hong Kong

History

by nepalgoods

Until about 1860 Hongkong was just a few fishing villages. Then the British got Kowloon and some Island under the Nanjing Treaty. Later (1898) a 99-year lease was granted on the New Territories.

In 1997 Hongkong and the New Territories returned to China. Now it is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Hongkong has a population of about 7 Mio people. It consits of Hongkong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories north of Kowloon. There are altogether about 260 outlying islands. Lantau being the biggest.

Money in Hong Kong

by Ewingjr98

Hong Kong money is called the Dollar. Despite Hong Kong's recent merge with China, the money has not changed significantly (except for the frequently changing printed-by line with "Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" or "Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited" or even "Bank of China" printed on the top. All are still legal in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Money is never much of a problem in the city. ATMs are relatively common in the city. Money exchanges are also easy to ... though we got a much better exchange rate at the money exchange on Canton & Peking Road than the exchanger in the airport. American credit cards are also widely accepted at the bigger stores and restaurants. Plan to use cash at the small shops & restaurants as well as the markets.

You must take the Star Ferry...

by gopher89

You must take the Star Ferry between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Take it at night if you can. The view is spectacular. This is a great city. It is alive with many things to see and do. I will miss the great variety of sights and foods that it offers.

Hong Kong Tip

by hongkong

Well I guess its home now so I miss my own space when I'm away. I miss my friends and I miss my computer but I can't say that I love Hong Kong nor do I particularly like it - however its giving us financial stability for the future and right now its a great place to be with the kids -just the climate means we can do things we wouldn't if we were in the UK.

There are more than six...

by aukjejetty

There are more than six million people in Hong Kong. About 1.3 million live on Hong Kong Island, around 2 million in mainland Kowloon, and the remainder in the New Territories and Outlying Islands. For administrative and electoral purposes, the territory is divided into various Districts.

Almost 95% of the population is ethnic Chinese; the international community includes various nationalities.
