This Hostel is recommended by the Rough Guide to South India so we decided to give it a chance because of the promised views of Coonoor center and the surrounding hills. I will admit that the views were very nice although the place and the management are far below Indian budget standards. The owner had decided to turn off the electricity in all rooms because it was 'too expensive', the rooms are incredibly cold in winter time and only one thin blanket was given per room. The old building (which could be beautifully restored) is damp and host to a number of bug species, while the promised (bucket of) hot water was not available during our stay.
I am definitely not picky when it comes to accomodation but the rude demeanor of the staff and the failure to provide hardly any of the advertised facilites leads me to suggest that you look elsewhere for a cheap room in Coonoor.
Pleasant enough stay in a family- and function-oriented hotel. Located well above the (relatively small) crowds of Coonoor. Staff is willing to go over and above what's expected. (One time, for me, uncomfortably over what's expected.)
Garden-facing first-floor rooms, decent restaurant serving Indian and continental meals, 24-hour room service. Nice open space for kids to play or for larger outdoor functions. Easy walking distance from Sims Park, nice hikes (on paved roads), and public transportation to major towns in the area (Ooty, etc.).
