Hotel New Sagar Priya: New Accommodation in Digha
We reached at 10.00PM in this hotel from Kolkata after drive of nearly 4 hrs. Last time we had stayed at Sagar Priya, this is their branch hotel just next to Sagar Priya, with better amenities and rooms. Service is also better! They offer discounts on weekdays and charge card rate on weekends and festival time. Bookings can be done directly from Kolkata.
Besides this there are at least 100 more new hotels have come up in New Digha alone for middle class people of Kolkata city, who are the major contributor of Digha's economy. There are also a few star hotels have come up with international class facility. But I did not have the time to check up.
All hotels are within the range of Rs.1000 - Rs.3000/- ( US$ 20-60). You can even go there without prior booking shall sure to get a room in an average class hotel within your reach. However, this condition is not applicable during Christmas holidays!

Sana Beach Resort: Mandarmani's Eco Friendly Resort
Thousands of small red crabs crawl around the 13 km long virgin beach making it look like a simmering field of the red flower. Years ago the resemblance ignited the imagination of the locals, they named it Mandarboni, in time it is called now as Mnandarmoni.
This chic resort has 62 rooms and cottages just on the beach of Mandarmani. The architectural characteristics are inspired by the summer palace built by the Mughals in combination with folk style of the village of Bengal, both are known for it's natural cooling. Suites, premium and club class royal rooms decorated with unique artwork and artefacts, featuring spacious bedrooms, sitting areas with a view of the sea. Services and aminities in the rooms included TV, telephone and daily housekeeping. The Sana beach also offers deluxe and standard rooms along with 20 trekkers tent in economy package.
Built by Mr.Sandipan Biswas an young enterpreneur from Kolkata over the last 12 years. He also visits the place often to see the things himself personally. He is well assisted by a set of professional managers.
Booking is done from their Kolkata office: 1A, Brindaban Paul Lane, Kolkata 700 003 , West Bengal, India.
Unique Quality: This resort is one of the unique in it's own quality. All rooms here are eco-friendly as it has no concrete roofs at all. The roofs are built with starw, wood and bamboo ( see pictures and videos). You have birds cage just above the roof, you can hear them chirping in the morning and evening with sunrise and sunset. The entire resort is having spacious lawn full of grenery, walking area, ponds full of fish, swimming pool( under construction), modern restaurants, coffee shop, banquet hall, party area, cottages, playing area for children, hammocks... in all it's a complete place where you can relax during weekend or on your holiday. The friendly staff of the resort with attentive service makes your stay a memorable one.
In case you want a pakage trip there are here to help you to select one. They also have pick up facility from Chwlkhola in case you are coming by bus from Kolkata or Digha.

Hotel Nest Shankarpur: Duped at Hotel Nest, Shankarpur
We stayed in Hotel Nest for 03 days in Sept 2009. We had no prior bookings and reached there on 24th at about 12pm. The manager informed that we could get 02 AC rooms on that day (Rs 1045 per day per room) but from 25th onwards we would have to take the package (per couple Rs 2500 per day inclusive of food). We were 04 adults and 01 child. The package would start from 25th lunch onwards. I said that we would leave early morning at about 5am on 26th so we could not take the package. The Manager said that then we would have to pay extra only for the buffet lunch and dinner for 25th. So the deal was fixed.
On the 25th at lunch time, we went to the hotel restaurant and saw that the buffet lunch was ready. The 05 of us took lunch which was plain rice, watery daal, alu-patal and bhindi masala as vegetables and next to the bhindi masala were the chicken and fish dishes. This did not go well with us vegetarians and Mother-in-law being a strict vegetarian could not eat properly. The hotel management apparently did not have the basic understanding that veg and non-veg items should not be placed together as is being done in all hotels elsewhere and even in Indian parties, weddings, receptions, etc. and has no respect for the beliefs of the vegetarians amongst us Indians. Seems that the hotel specially caters to the needs of non-vegetarians and vegetarians (guests from outside Bengal) are not welcome here. Anyways, after the so called buffet lunch, a bill amounting to Rs 1500 was placed before us!! Rs 300 per plate for that lunch! We had been eating for around Rs 400/500 per meal and all of a sudden the exorbitant cost stuck us like a lightning. The management did not inform us about the buffet lunch cost beforehand and even I was not expecting such a lunch would leave me poorer by Rs 1500. The manager said that we could have opted for a normal lunch, but this was not told to us before taking the buffet lunch. A lot of heated arguments later I had no option but to shell out the amount and found that the management had tricked us and we had fallen into their trap. We skipped dinner that day and went to Digha (15kms) to have dinner.
Even though it was the peak Puja period there were hardly any guests around. So these are the ways the management at Hotel Nest adopt to extract money from guests like us to keep the hotel going.
The hotel otherwise is clean and well maintained (except for a really noisy window AC). The beach is nothing to boast of and it is almost the same as that in Chandipur- a waveless sea. So if you people are thinking of enjoying the waves at sea, you will have no option but to go to Digha. We were lucky enough as we had taken our own car and had a good time at New Digha. So my advice to everyone is to leave out Shankarpur from your itinerary and book a decent hotel at New Digha. The waves there are good and you will have fun frolicking in the Bay of Bengal.
Unique Quality: The hotel otherwise is clean and well maintained (except for a really noisy window AC). The beach is nothing to boast of and it is almost the same as that in Chandipur- a waveless sea.

Digha Tourist Lodge: Surprisingly Non Govt Feeling
It was a good stay.
But the people assisting us in the reception seemed very casual about the whole concept of a guest coming and staying. Maybe because they had no role to play as its governed by Govt.
But surprisingly it was clean and had AC/Non AC well maintained rooms.
They are creating more AC rooms in the ground floor. The dining hall is seperate. they do not serve lunch or dinner at rooms. We had to have them in their dining hall.
Only bed tea and sometimes on request breakfast could be had.
It far from the maddening crowd although within walking distance from the sea. Good points on security and generator facility. Good Food.
AC rooms cost Rs 900/ 1400 based on other additions like geyser, TV, Ground floor
Unique Quality: Clean, Secure and generator backup facility
Good Food and within 2 min from the sea yet far from the crowd.

Digha Tourist Lodge.: Digha's Better Hotels.
Update as on 12 October'2012 Last month we made a visit to Digha for a night only, this hotel is now refurbished, painted and all renovated as the new non Marxist govt has taken the responsibility to make the Digha town a true weekend getaway in all respect. Now there are many good hotels which have come up in the town with all modern amenities.
Last Friday( 1st of June) we traveled to Digha, un booked. We just got up and drove to Digha about 200 KMs from Kolkata. To our utter surprise we found all better hotels are full and especially A.C. rooms are just not available, it was all booked!!! The better private hotels were charging premium on room rent and behaviour of the reception were totally changed. All these fuss were because they were running to full capacity! The sweltering heat at kolkata was driving people out to go to the beaches. We searched for about 12/ 13 hotels in Old & New Digha and all were full. Then we decided to visit West Bengal Tourism's Digha Tourist Lodge( we never went there as it was govt. run and thought the service and rooms will be horrible). To our surprise we found the the reception was extremely warm, rooms were spacious ( at least 18'*18'), the size of their 2 bath rooms will make the complete room in other better hotels, wall to wall carpet, AC was working and the rates?, extremely reasonable. The ground floor AC room charged to us Rs.700/- plus tax. In other hotels it was half the size and rates were not less than Rs.1500 or Rs 2000 plus tax per day( Plus bad behaviour free). I forgot to take a photo inside the room.
In other words our stay was extremely comfortable in Digha Tourist Lodge, which we had under estimated. It is better advisable to book the rooms well in advance during summer vacations( April end to mid June) of schools. As this place is now very well connected with Calcutta, it can be reached with in 3-4 hours drive and equal time by train. So it remains crowded on weekends and holidays.
Unique Quality: This place has huge lawn, garden, stroll area, big rooms, big toilets, well made beds, good behaviour of the staffs and so on. But every thing requires to be re-touched, re painted, restaurant & Bar needs renovation, furniture needs to be polished, changed. In all it should be handed over to some professional who will make this place look good, feel good. I feel nobody will mind if the rates are increased about 10 to 15% to get better facilities. It is required as it was built in 1960s to 1970s ( when the crowd were less in no and journey took 8-10 hours), with minor renovation from time to time. But today it requires to be renovated completely to give it at least two star category look.
Our room cost was Rs. 800/- or about USD 18 per day. The upstairs rooms would br Rs1000/- or USD 22 per day inclusive of taxes. And frankly saying these are extremely good rates for the kind of room and service you get.
Rooms can be booked from Kolkata itself: Dy.G.M; W.B.T.D.C, Tourism Centre, 3/2 B.B.D.Bag East, Kolkata- 700 001. Phones: 91-33-22485168/ 22103199.
