"Baga Beach"

In October, it was still not peak tourist season. Fortunately, it meant there were smaller crowds on the beach, and accomodation was cheaper. Unfortunately, it also meant that many famous spots like Tito's were closed. And since it was slim picking for all the touts / street vendors, there were a lot more annoying interruptions from somebody wanting to sell us something or the other..

This is the view from the lodge I stayed in for 2 nights - quite ordinary rooms, but an excellent location, bang on Baga beach.
Also, at 1300 for a double room with breakfast inclusive, was not a bad deal at all !

Visited Goa with my friend Paula as a treat when I finished my contract working for Monarch Airlines.
Had a 2 week stay there at the Colonia Santa Maria Hotel on Baga Beach which was an ok hotel with nice staff and good food.
Hired a taxi driver, Dilip, who took us out to the hippy market at Anjuna and also to see some temples and a Spice Plantation. Spent most of our days on the beach, had dinner at the hotel (included) and then our nights at one of the beach shack bars or local open air nightclubs.
Had a good time in spite of the mosquitos and extreme heat!

visit the capital Panjim

Panaji welcomes the tourists not with tourist sites but with its character. Apart from being the capital of Goa, it is also the focal point of tourism in Goa and a small and charming city on the banks of silvery Mandovi River. Panaji has beautiful, red-roofed houses, built in the Latin style. But the city does not lack in modern infrastructure and you can find modern houses, well laid gardens, statues and avenues lined with Gulmohar, Acassia and other trees.

The local village of Calangute is in the forest close to the beach. People live a simple life here and it is very quiet in the dusty streets.

Cultural diversity and peaceful co-existence

Goa is a perfect example of Cultural diversity and peaceful co-existence. For many centuries Hindus and Christians (and a pretty big population of Muslims) have co-existed peacefully here respecting each other's religion and absorbing the good sides of the other's religion into their own religion. The impact of Portuguese culture is evident and this is because of the long rule by the Portuguese here.
