    Highland Beach Resort

    by

This wonderful 'local' hotel was suggested to me by Shalin, and was a right choice. I was there in low season and it was almost empty, so I could enjoy the wonderful swimming pool (when it didn't rain). I couldn't talk about nightlife, as I was practically alone, but the restaurant is excellent. It's well situated, just a few meters north od 'Dona Alcina' resorts.

Horrible stay at Highland Beach Resort

by TripAdvisor Member Roseats

This was our first time to Goa...We booked & checked into this hotel with the expectations that i have for a 3-star hotel as this hotel has been categorized as a 3-star hotel. To be very frank, the staff and the management are so unfriendly, rude and mannerless people. When the TV channels were so blur, we never got it worked by the maintanence poeple till our check-out day. The Restuarant Manager kisses your feet only if the tips are paid well otherwise, he doesn't even mind u. This hotel doesn't even have a staff who knows the value of guests. I was asked to pay by the " Restaurant Manager " without getting me the cash memo . They have taken the money from us for Jacuzzi saying that it was working, but after paying when i tried to fix up an appointment for Jacuzzi, i was told that it has not been working for "5 months"..Whatever amenities were promised in the 3 nights/4 days package that i took for Rs.11,500/- was never provided. It was a nightmare staying in the hotel. Front office would be very sincere in their responsibilities only when it comes to the Check out time. They will call up every now and then on the check out date to tell u to checkout the hotel.

When i called the GM to complain about those concerns, he told me to come and meet him in person and when i was on the way to his office..there came a tall man saying that he is the Front office manager and he started to share his bad experiences that he had in other hotels when he was holidaying. The funniest part is the GM vanished off in clouds when i was on my way to his office. The bottom line i can say is " Higland beach resort is really not high in its standards as a 3 star hotel and it's too low for the hospitality industry." Hotel staff and Management has racial discrimination towards indians. My trip to Goa is a worst one that i never wish to have ever again in my life.

A bunch of places....

The Marinha Dourada at Baga-Arpora (a 4 star i think)offers a great view-with a lake being on the premises! The Highland Beach Resort at Candolim(a 4star) is within walking distance from Calangute and Baga, and full of life!Always bursting with activity especially during the high season when foreigners flock towards Goa!

Living in a 5 star just doesn't let you experience Goa the way it's meant to be seen (if its off season, go ahead chill out in the luxury)! 5 stars like the Leela, Holiday Inn, Marriot etc are usually located in Panjim or South Goa, which are more laidback.
If you enjoy the liveliness and the festive air, I would recommend some accomodation near the North Goa beaches(Candolim,Calangute and Baga are the best!)Don't bother with something very fancy-coz you wouldn't want to miss out on all the fun by staying in your room!!:) Its pretty easy to find accomodation, ask around-everyones friendly!
Goa gets packed around Xmas-New Years so book ahead!

Best to avoid, to avoid dissapointment

I would not describe the Highland Beach Resort as 3*. The staff are un-helpful, the rooms are extremely basic and the air-conditioning leaves a lot to be desired. The beds are hard and they set out the breakfast buffet crockery and utensils (which are located outside), the night before.
Be careful. We had a very expensive PDA mobile phone “go missing” from our room. Probably taken whilst we was on the balcony as the room was being cleaned. You will be constantly hassled by the room boy’s who ask for money saying it is their last day and then after a day they appear back again. The two guys who will bring your cases up to your room will be ungrateful at receiving £1 each. When you consider that a 3 course meal with soft drinks will come to around 650 rupees, (around £7.50) then receiving £1 each for moving your luggage 50 metres is a lot. The day you depart you will be met with the same two guys who will barge into your room just before you are about to leave to check that you haven’t left anything worth while in your apartment for them to claim. This is just not what you expect from a 3* beach resort hotel. Candolim is generally a nice place just a shame we didn’t pick better accommodation.

Good Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Doffy

Stayed in this hotel for one week at the beginning of Feb. Its a good hotel, basic but clean. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment with a kitchen which was a bit of a waste as the kitchen and one of the bedrooms never got used. The bathrooms are a bit funny with the shower just connected to the wall with no enclosure or shower curtain. Also we didn't bother with the air conditioning as it was really loud, we found the ceiling fans to be fine. Beds were made everyday but towels were taken to be cleaned and not replaced on one day but that was not a problem just phoned down to reception and they were replaced straight away. Staff there was fine not over friendly but did the job. We didn't sample the restaurant as we always went out to eat, only had breakfast once, just found it easier to have brunch in one of the beach shacks. Our favourite was Bobby's, lovely staff who look after you and the food was good. Candolim overall had it good point and its bad points. Not sure wether i would return, the Goa bug didn't really bite us like it has done for so many.

could be better

Stayed at the Highland Beach for two weeks in February.
There is some buliding work going on at this hotel but it did not affect us as we had a room away from the noise , however some rooms do look directly over the site. On arrival given fruit juice, check-in was swift and then we were shown to our rooms, bags followed - be prepared to give a tip for each suitcase,,the porters accept pound coins. We were given a two bedroomed apartment on the ground floor. This had a sitting room and kitchen and bathroom with an en suite in the main bedroom..also two balconies. The kitchen had a table and chair and fridge..nothing else. there was a tv with some satelite channels in the sitting room. The bathrooms were adequate with showers (no cubicle). On arrival in the room they ask if you would like the mini bar filled up and they give you a choice of what you want..you pay upfront and it is quite cheap...this can be paid for in sterling aswell. the rooms were kept clean by our room boy. the sheets were clean and the towels changed regularly..yes they weren't persil white but when you get there you will soon see why!
The beds were the most uncomfortable we have ever experienced. They will get you another mattress..but we didn't think it made any difference. we found that putting the cushions from the lounge seats on the bed and getting the room boy to make the beds with these on was the best option.
Breakfast was one of the worst aspects of this hotel. It is buffet style around the pool serving eggs, cold toast ,juice and tea or coffee. you can order other things as we did and pay for them...a fruit platter was a good choice at £1 but the standard of this varied from excellent to poor. There were three swimming pools but the one by the restaurant was hardly used...there was the usual early morning towel rush ..to claim the best spot...my advice go to the beach..about 15 min walk away or two mins in a taxi from the hotell at a cost of 50 rupees. Take a padlock for the safety deposit box. Any food we brought was ok but you can eat out more cheaply and with no fear of stomach upset and in a better atmosphere outside the hotel go for it. Don't change your money at the hotel you get a better rate at the happy Haven stores just down the road on the left and the lovely Sandra will change notes and travellers cheques fat a better rate. She also has a telephone were you can call home very cheaply .
In all this hotel had no soul ,, there were better B&b's in the area..that i would book before returning here. We also used the laundry service and this was very good.

Highland Beach, Candolim

by TripAdvisor Member missysalsa

stayed at Highland Beach for a week mid February 2007 and had a good time. only drawback is fans in bedroom don't really cool things down and air con too noisy and right next to bed! good location for beach and Infernos is a must for meals in evening - on road down to beach, left at chinese restaurant.

just about satisfactory!

by TripAdvisor Member UK.lovers

Stayed in Feb 07 as family - 2 teenagers. Hotel was fine & was as expected. They've mainly got it right. Excellent air con.
Breakfast was always lovely, with a fair choice however ordering anything else (even drinks) from the restaurant became a standing joke as service was very slow to say the least & not very efficient, but food when it arrived was of a good standard.
There was a tendency to bring meals out separately so we rarely ate 'together'. The feeling was that there was no initiative to improve this as service charge is added.
Eating out was hit & miss. We all got stomach upsets at some stage so decided to stick with hotel food!
The only real negative thing would be the building work that is going on. Not a massive problem, but from an asthetic point could have been a lot better. In fact the apartment block we stayed in felt half built & we were practically cohabiting with the builders & their families....After saying this, our stay would have been less interesting without them!
We hadn't been to India before, so it was a massive culture shock.
Be prepared for dodgy smells & lots of dust/pollution, squalor & poverty, questionable hygiene standards & toilet facilities, stomach upsets, maniac drivers & even the plainest of food will taste spicy!
Despite this, Goa grew on us, & we've got some fab memories. Money goes a long way in this part of the world. The weather is gorgeous, markets are wonderful & people genuine. The sea is very rough & so warm - warmer than the pools at the Highland Beach!

Highland fair deal for the price

by TripAdvisor Member vieveLancs

Spent 4 nights at the Highland - the hotel is basic as you would expect but the staff are friendly enough and the general appearance of the complex is clean and safe with a decent swimming pool. The room was better than expected with a seperate living area opening on to a balcony. I've read other reviews, the beds aren't as bad as you might think and though the air conditioning is noisy, I didn't have any trouble sleeping. One thing to be aware of is the mosquitos when sat by the pool in late afternoon - I was covered in bites after sitting there for only 20 mins. Candolim isn't my favourite destination in Goa-the beach wasn't the best and the shack owners/
staff weren't as friendly as in other places but the taxi guys outside the hotel are really nice and they charged fair rate to take us to other places in Goa.

Super Highland Beach

by TripAdvisor Member rochat28

Stayed here during the Easter holiday and we are a family with 2 kids aged 6 & 9.

I have been to goa before so knew that the standard of accommodation for the stars awarded is below what we expect in the UK and previously stayed at the Dona Alcina so anything would be better.....but the hotel was really good and the staff friendly .I feel that some of the things people complain about are unjust and are part of the Indian culture.

The Hotel: On arrival we had five suitcases all really heavy, two lads took them from the bus and delivered them straight to our room, we gave them a quid each which they were happy with and quite frankly not having to heave them through the hotel grounds and up stairs was worth a quid of anyones money.

The room was basic but clean, with a large living room and two bedrooms which one had an ensuite and then there was a separate bathroom. Two reasonable balconies and a small kitchen area with a fridge. They asked us if we wanted beer etc and we ordered and this arrived quickly. The room boy came every day and cleaned really well and we were never pestered for money by anybody. The air con was only in one bedroom and yes it was noisy so take earplugs if poss and its hard to get them out there. The matress was hard but you get used to it.

The breakfast was basic but filling as long as you wanted toast or eggs! Our boys thought it was great that they could go over to the chef and order their choice of omelette and have it made fresh for them whilst they waited. There was also juice or tea/coffee. All the waiters were friendly.

In fact all the staff that we encountered were really friendly and I was really impressed with them especially in light of some of the comments that have been made on this forum. They made our boys fell really important and the reception staff used to chat away to our youngest who became know as 10 06 as that was our room number and he always had to ask for the key!

The night before we left we asked for a wake up call (we were leaving at 3.45am) and the porter asked us if we wanted help with our cases we said yes as I didn't want to have our suitcases down the steps whilst managing two kids at that time in the morning which we gave him 200rps. Now some people may think that that is too much or that you shouldn;t have to tip to get good service and I do agree however I feel that for the sake of a couple of quid here and there it makes your holiday go that much smoother and when you think that they get paid low wages it really isn't that big a deal.

We changed rooms during our stay and moved to block 24. These rooms are round Pool 3 and they are a lot better, I was happy enough with our first room but the second room was vastly superior. There was air con in both bedrooms and it was quiet!

The pool was good and pool 3 is really good for kids as it is quite shallow and there is plenty of sunbathing room. The pool boys will bring you towels (free) and they are constantly keeping the pool clean.

Overall I would say this is a really good 3 star hotel, if you want plush then I'm afraid you're going to have to pay for it by going to the Leela or Fort Aguada but if you want good clean accommodation for a reasonable price, where the staff are friendly in a central location then this is the hotel for you.

We stayed in the Highland Beach Resort the last two weeks of October and had a wonderful time. We found the hotel to be very clean and well-maintained. The rooms themselves were spacious and the air-conditioning excellent. Our room was separated into three separate area and the shower, toilet and wash handbasin were all separate which we found very useful. The three pools were well attended and cared for. What can I say about the staff, they were helpful, friendly, attentive and always smiling. The only down side, if you can call it that, was the electricity cutting out but it was only for a few minutes and anyone can cope with that. All in all I would say the Highland Beach Resort is a brilliant hotel and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone, I will definitely be back.
