Hotel Marvel - Ahmedabad is....... by Hmmmm I shoulda stayed away when I saw that the hotel was named after a comic book company. But it was 4am and after waking the dorman we were sorta obliged to take the room. Not to mention everyone, Especially us were dog tired. The room was ok. A little smelly. It smelled like before us 58 smokers had a smoking boat race. The smokers had to see who could smoke 25 cigarettes the fastest. They had cable TV that gave good pictures of black and grey buzzing snow. In the surrouding rooms were Indian men, who sat up all night drinking An variant of Arak shouting and taking turns to slam the doors.
However the 'POO' factor comes not from the hotel itself, but from the staff. At 3 in the morning we negotiated a price, and I asked since it was so late (we just got off a train) could we check out 2 hours later. They said yes of course. We went to bed thinking "Lovely!" In the morning we were woken early and told taht we have to leave. Hurridly we got our stuff together and checked out. Our bill was three times more expensive than the agreed price. After arguing and being surrounded by the security guy, laundry boys and the Desk staff, we got away paying double the orginal price. We left there swearing, and went straight to Le Meridien. A good call. Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Umerbhai Momin, Gheekanta Road - 535 9941

Lamba's House in New Delhi by DirtyRudy This inn was off of some obscure street in New Delhi. The rooms were really that bad. I was grateful that the air-conditioning worked. It was definitely a place where I wouldn't leave my luggage while I was out touring the city though. I'm also glad I brought a lock to secure all my valuables! Other than that, they had cable television and I got to enjoy the cool Indian music videos! Holiday Inn in Jaipur, India by DirtyRudy The beds were really comfortable and the rooms were a nice size. It's got cable TV to watch your favorite Indian music videos! It's near Lake Maota and about 15 min. from Amber Fort and the City Palace in downtown Jaipur.
There's this really nasty guy playing two flutes through his nose. Everything was fun at first, but then it took a turn for the worst... He had a long beard and mustache which he held right under my nose as we took a picture. It smelled like 5-year old unwashed armpit hair... Nasty!!! Elegant Marble breezeway, Nahagarh Ranthambhore by pchamlis, 2 more photos When you are booking hotels for India, I highly recommend that you look into Havelis. This is a general term used to describe Indian Heritage style properties. Many of these hotels are similar in scope and practice to the Schlosshotels (castle hotels) in Alpine Europe. There are many groups representing "havelis" and historic hotels. And the term haveli is thrown around a lot... it's not always a historic gem. It could mean an old, run-down hotel. So, you're going to want some recommendations and to do some research. One very good group to contact regarding Indian heritage accomodations throughout India is (not surprisingly) The Indian Heritage Hotel Association. Their website is http://indianheritagehotels.com/ We stayed at three of their properties... The Laxmi Vilas in Bharatpur, the Nahagarh Ranthambhore in Sawai Madohpur, and the Alsisar Haveli in Jaipur. We were satisfied with all three bookings, and I'd recommend those three hotels to anyone. If a historic hotel is something that appeals to you, and you'd like to share the same roof that generations of maharahs and their courts enjoyed, look into a heritage-style property.

One of the more interesting hot water setups...! by lachydragon My travel style around India for this trip was one of Budget Hotels. I had never really travelled like this before, having always been a stickler for having every last detail booked but it is rewarding to make these plans as you go. In all the places I stayed I shared a double room with a friend and we always paid in the range of Rs.150 - 500 per room (US$ 3.50 - 11). The quality of rooms at this price range varied greatly and it is standard in India to be able to inspect the room on arrival to check if it suits...occasionally some poor hapless other guest was still using the room but they were, as most people in India are, quite obliging. Many of the places we stayed at were currently in their "off-season" or the winter season up North, if this is the case where you are travelling in India then it is well worthwhile mentioning this to your hotellier and seeing if you can get a bit of further discount. This price range always got us a private bathroom, geyser hot water, doublr or twin beds with bedding, sometimes towels, and occasionally a private balcony. The most important thing is not to try and compare AUstralian, European, or US hotel prices and assume that $5 a night buys a hovell - this budget can get you cheaply and comfortably around India. - See my further accommodation tip about "operation simmer down" our patented accommodation search method!!! :-P

Meherangarh Fort from Haveli Guesthouse. Pic: ADI by Hmmmm Anytime you step off a bus into a new town in India, it's always intimidating - it is boiling hot and you and your backpack are forced to fight off all the touts offering accommodation. So it is always a relief to get a price negotiated on a rickshaw and get to your guest house, especially when the staff is as great as it was in the 250-year-old Haveli Guest House, where I stayed in Jodhpur. The interior was mostly marble, including my private bathroom. Haveli Guest House is so good you should beware of commission-hungry rickshaw wallahs who may take you to one of three imitations. Ours is a five-storey, 350-year-old golden sandstone building...

The Hotel Amar by Paul2001 I was very fortunate when I stayed in this hotel. As it turned I got quite sick while in Agra and I spent alot of time in the room. Thankfully they had satillite TV. Not that you have come all the way to India to watch television but when you holed up in a room for a day you need the company. As for the hotel itself, the Amar is rather smart. The rooms were very large, clean and quite modern. The hotel had a large breakfast room and a bar which I used when I emerged from my room for air. The service here was really helpful as I arranged couple of taxi tours from here. My one problem with the Hotel Amar is that it lacked something when it comes to character. As you can see from this photograph, it is very much a cement blocklike structure
The hotel had a pool which for me was a rarity in India. The walk here to the Taj takes about 10 minutes. There are a few good restaurants nearby including the Pizza Hut if you had enough of Indian food like I did at this point in my journey. the Tourist rest house in the Sadar Bazaar area, Again we had chosen this place because of the good write up it received in the Lonely Planet guide. By no means was this a top-notch hotel, all that it had were the very basics required for a short stay, clean rooms with air-cooling fans and bathroom attached. The rooms were set around a small open courtyard where tables and chairs were laid out for dining or just sitting in the sun. We opted for an air-conditioned room, which was a little more expensive and cost us 400 rupees a night, which equates to around six pounds, not bad for two people. This was the first time that we had to use the padlock we had brought with us, as the security on the door was a little flimsy.
