  • Interior of the Great Kabab Factory - India
    Interior of the Great Kabab
    Factory

This is a very nice place. I stayed here for 6 days.
However this is not for the budget traveller (USD85 and up per day). It has at least one world class restaurant, three other very good ones, a bowling hall, a sports bar and a convenient fitness center.

    Very close to the airport.
    Superbly sumptous complimentary breakfast.
A nice full size pool and fitness center.
A one of a kind restaurant in the 'Great Kabab factory'.

Hotel Amber: Handy Hotel in Kalka
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If as we were doing, Only spending one night in Kalka en-route to Shimla (Kalka is the end of the broad gauge railway and the start of the narrow gauge (Toy Train) to Shimla) then this hotel is a good choice as it is the closest one to the railway station.
Good sized En-Suite Rooms, Clean and with satellite TV and With balcony.
Price 600r (As we only stayed the one night there was no bargaining)

The hotel also has a generator which comes in handy as there would appear to be many power cuts in Kalka

Hilltop Palace: Fine Upscale Hotel in Udaipur

  • Hilltop Palace, Udaipur - India
    Hilltop Palace, Udaipur
    by Paul2001

The Hilltop Palace was ultimately one of the best hotels that I stayed in while traveling to India. The rooms are large, air conditioned and have cable TV. The is a great breakfast room with fantastic views of Udaipurs lakes. The hotel also has a fine pool for swimming(it was rather hot while I was there so you may want to) and a very good bar which can be a rarity in India. The one downside was the chipmunk size lizard that I found on the vanity in my washroom one morning.
The Hilltop was somewhat above my budget while I was traveling through India but I decided to stay there because I felt that it would be best to book a decent room since I would arrive in Udaipur late at night. Therefore I would not probably recommend this hotel if you are traveling on a tight budget. However since there were a large number of American businessmen here with their families, I could say that this is the ideal place to stay if you are among that sort of crowd. It is rather upscale

Great pool and pleasant bar. As the name suggests the Hilltop sits on a hill in a wealthy neighborhood in Udaipur. Some rooms have stunning views but you will pay extra for this.

We took a Large room on the top floor, Very clean and en-suite with satellite TV and a balcony with awesome views of both the town and surrounding hills.
As McLeod Ganj was Very Busy with The Dalai Lama having “The Teaching” (I must have checked out 20 other hotels before finding the Hotel Green and they were mostly full or couldn’t accommodate us for the three nights that we were staying there)
Initially the owner wanted 800r per night per night, but after a lot of bargaining he came down to 700r and wouldn’t drop further, so as it was a Really Nice room we took it !!
Friendly Staff and a Very Good Place to stay !!

The restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel serves very good food.
Try the Breakfast – But Only if you are Really Hungry as it is Enormous !!!!!,

Fairlawn hotel, Calcutta: Stay in a film star
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Calcutta has all the big chains of faceless hotels somewhere about the plave and of course the Oberoi - palatial opulance on a street of beggars.

In my opinion however there is only one hotel in Calcutta that is worth considering. At only sixty dollars a night (full-board) it is officially a two-star hotel, but it is leagues above the budget hotels in Sudder street that it faces.

The place has been run for forty odd years by the same husband and wife team and in that time just about every travel writer or travel documentary has used the place due to its unique mixture of colonial and Indian styles. Rooms (nowadays) are modern a/c affairs with the usual comforts, but the real star of the place is the leafy green garden and restaurant with waiters looking like Maharjahs (except they are the ones doing the serving).

I personally stayed in another hotel as the place was fully booked, but I had the pleasure of eating there twice. Do book ahead - it really is something else.

The hotel features in the film 'City of Joy' . It's given another name in the film, but is is very recognisable.

Abad Plaza Hotel, Cochin.: Safe, Friendly Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I've stayed here 4 times and have always had a great time. The staff are really friendly (I usually travel alone, so that's really important), the rooms are clean and though the room views are not inspiring, the view from the rooftop is spectacular at sunset. The food is great from any of the restaraunts, including the coffee bar. I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone.

Lovely rooftop pool, jaccuzi which overlooks the city ( sit back & watch the world go by !). The massage centre is great, reasonably priced and treats all kind of conditions, from dry skin to asthma, to headaches etc. The best thing is definately the staff - everyone goes out of their way to make your stay great !

Sheela Inn (Agra): Sheela Inn (Agra)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We were supposed to stay in Sheela Hotel as we booked in advance , owing to they were out of hot shower temporarily. They brought us to Sheela Inn where are also owned by same boss. It seems Sheela Inn is much worth value than Sheela Hotel.... we paid Rs450 TWNB with air-cooler & hot shower. It located in Eastern Gate,Taj Ganj within no-pollution zone. Room is clean, spacious, equipped with TV & bath tub.You may enjoy with Taj Mahal view while breakfast .....

The Grand Hotel, Calcutta: What's grand about it?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • When we stayed here in the late '70s, the Grand Hotel was supposedly one of the nicest hotels in the city. That's a scary thought considering my dad wouldn't let me jump in this filthy pool. There were roaches in the bathtub and the electricity was unreliable. The view out the window was out to the street where there was a public latrine of sorts. I watched men stop along the street and urinate on the wall!
