Hi ..
Mumbai to Neral is on the Central Suburban line (we have Central, harbour and Western).. You need to catch a Karjat suburban train (also called local train) from CST Suburban line. Both fast & slow trains stop at Neral. You can buy first class/ second class tickets directly at CST terminus (no online tickets)
At Neral, the toy train is adjoining the main station. You can check timings and do online bookings at this site http://www.irctc.co.in/ ..
Frankly, nothing great in this train ride .. hv done it myself ... takes too long... a share cab outside neral station will take u to matheran in 40 mins and cost u Rs 80 per head or u can book the whole cab for 400-500

The local train in mumbai runs between Mumbai and Karjat. Karjat is the last station for local train. so first you think that you have to reach Karjat by local train. From karjat it is 20 Km. which can be travelled by road/ taxi.
Local trains are available frequently at alternate of 10 mints which halt at karjat.
If you think to go Neral by long distance train, it will prove hectic. It is like same as you plan for Mumbai to Dehli. The same process, timing, long waiting time. only 2 trains travel in day and night. So, it is better local train.
Again it depends on where will be stay in Mumbai. It is vast area from CST/ Churchate to Kurla, Thane, Kalyan.
Train route is .....CST----Dadar----Kurla----Thane---Kalyan---Karjat.
Your destination is Karjat. Always take ticket of 1.st class coach. Trains are crowded in morning up to 10 AM, and evening after 5 Pm. So start your journey from Mumbai between 10 AM and 4 PM. YOU will feel comfortable, and enjoy the journey.
