how long does it take in a taxi to Indirha Gandhi airport from Rishikesh, please?

by catsville

Even a rough guideline would be useful!

Thanks!

Should be about 6-7 hours.

thanks for such a speedy response! - I have read everything from ten hours, to five... and I am wondering if I can make it to catch a 2pm flight home , travelling to the airport from Rishikesh in the morning.. sounds like I'd need a 6am taxi....?

I was thinking also about the train option from Haridwar, not sure which one will be more efficient/quicker.. or if really they are about the same but the train is cheaper..

Trying hard to decide times so I can book my flight!

I had to get a taxi from Haridwar to Delhi, as the train was
cancelled and it took over 6 hours, so it will be a minimum
of 7 hours for you, going to the airport.I would go to Delhi
a day early, because anything can happen. BTW the Shatabdi
train early morning is faster and more comfortable (and cheaper)...

I agree with ElCordobez about gettinbg the Shatabi Express- its easy and fast.
We did the Delhi-Rishikesh trip (but with stops along the way) in 6.5 hours)
The traffic was not too bad that day.......
However, if you have a flight, I would not risk it. As you get into Delhi, the traffic gets very dense.

See my Rishkesh page for info on car trip- (link is on my page)

If there's a flight to catch, I'd be inclined to leave a lot of extra time for that trip - certainly more than an hour or two. I'd want to be there the day before - that way, in the best case, you'd have a few hours in the morning to see something in Delhi before needing to get to the airport; at worst, you'd still catch your flight.

Travel Tips for Rishikesh

Take plenty of time

by David&Pauline

Spend as much time in Rishikesh as you can afford, it's a serendipitous place with contrasting surprises around each corner. There's even an ATM machine next to the Shiva garden in Swarg Ashram, it is a bit of a congregational point for the local beggars though. It's a bit tough leaving the ATMs air-conditioned booth, stepping over limbless pilgrims, dropping a few rupees into their bowls when you've just filled your wallet with crisp new notes. At least they seem to accept their Karma, knowing next time around, they'll have the fat purse and you the rice bowl. We rested easy in the knowledge that the town has some very exclusive ashrams, which are way out of our budget, where India's new elite stay while purging their souls.
A good tip for spending your last day visiting Haridwar, is to catch the night train from there back to Delhi. If we get around to it we must add our tips for visiting this even more holy city, though it is geared more towards the devout Hindu, than Rishikesh; which is far more welcoming to both new age and old age hippies like us. We miss the tranquility.

Yoga, meditation and hill walking

by David&Pauline

Almost everyone comes to Rishikesh for the Yoga lessons and meditation classes. There are a mind-blowing number of places to study and a thousand Gurus to study under. We spoke to a Hindu businessman, on the train to Haridwar; he told us it took him seven years to find the right guru for him. Apart from the spiritual improvement, Rishikesh is on the edge of the Garhwal Himalayas and offers fantastic walking, climbing and terrifying white water river rafting.

SWARG NIWAS TEMPLE COMPLEX

by lynnehamman

This giant pink temple sits on one end of the Lakshman Jhula Bridge. Its hard to miss- it is a huge, imposing building. It looks a bit like a 13 storied castle. Inside there are many shrines to Hindu deities, and at the entrance sit flower-sellers.
Reaching the top floor of this building needs a strong pair of legs, but the view is spectacular.

Iskcon Temple

by RAJASTHANBYCAR

Iskcon temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna Completed in 1998, and were built by the Hare-Rama Hare-Krishna cult followers. These complexes are elegantly built and are few of the largest temple complexes in India. There are beautiful paintings of Russian artists on the different past times of Radha Krishna, Sita, Ram, Laxman, Hanuman and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Special programmes like Kirtan, Aarti, Pravachan and Prasadam are held every day.

Rishikesh: the land of many experiences

by uditbhalla

"RIshikesh"

Rishikesh, I have been to this small town on the foothills of garhwal himalayas several over the past 4 years and every time i discover a lot more about this magical place and a little bit about me.
A trip to rishikesh has something for everyone. It is known as the YOGA capital of INDIA, the town is full of ashrams which house many yoga gurus of the country. As the evening approaches the air is filled with spirituality and chants of shlokas.
For the adventure seekers this is a special place as it is the most famous river rafting destination in India. The nearby mountains gives an easy access to some very good single day treks.

All these factors and many other makes Rishikesh a refershing experience everytime.
