Chital, or the Spotted Deer, is India's most common deer. It is often found in large herds of up to 50 animals, and is found all over India apart from in the extreme north.
They grow to a height of up to 90 cm at the shoulders, and can weigh a maximum of 85 kg. The life expectancy is around 25 years.
Also known a Blue Bull, the Nilgai is a large antelope. Males have short, smooth horns with an average lenght of 18 cm. Females usually do not grow horns, but may occasionally. They grow to 119-150 cm at the shoulder and can weigh up to 290 kg. Life expectancy up to 30 years. This, the largest of the Asiatic antelopes, is considered sacred in India.
General colouring is grey to brownish grey in females with patches of white on the face and below the chin. Males are darker with a blueish tone to the body, hence the name.
For those taking a jeep, the wildlife guide and driver will arrange to pick you up at the hotel at a specified time. Before dawn, the hotel parking lot is likely to be somewhat chaotic as jeeps and tour groups find each other. Then, the vehicles all head to the park, past an old dam, where men are likely to be bathing. At the park entrance, there's a ranger station where all the vehicles stop and everyone gets out to drink an Indian tea sold by the vendors allowed to stay there. The rangers then assign guides to particular jeep trails so that tourists are even distributed within the park jeep trail system. Up the hill from the ranger station is the entrance to Ranthambhore Fortress.
Many hostile armies attempted to overthrow the fort, but with little or no success. Great warriors such as Alaudin Khilji, Feroz Tughlaq, Bahadur Shah and Kutub-ud-din all failed in their efforts. According to a legend, over a thousand women committed mass suicide rather than succumb to the marauding armies of Alauddin Khilji in 1303 – a victorious invader.
Take a trip into the old town of Sawai Madhopur! Its a great area for shopping, loads of textiles, jewelry and various things! Not many tourists go here and you will find a crowd of people following you around as you shop!!
