Must See: Golconda Fort
by Donna_in_India
Golconda Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must see in Hyderabad. It was originally founded in the 13th century by the Kakatiyas but expanded by the Qutb Shahi kings. It is a massive granite fort built on a 400 foot hill with a circumference of 7 km.
I highly recommend getting a licensed guide at the entrance (about Rs 500) and making the climb to the highest point, Bala Hissar. (Our guide was extremely informative.) It is not a steep climb and took us less than 30 minutes with short photo stops along the way. Along the way there are a few lookout areas (overlooking the entire city), a Mosque, and a Hindu Temple, Mankal. There is also a prison which still has the religious paintings in a cell done by one of the prisoners.
The fortress city within the walls was famous for the diamond trade. It is said that the Kohinoor diamond, the Hope diamond, and the Orloff diamond of Catherine the Great all came from here.
Each night at 7 p.m. there is a sound (in English) and light show. Of course, there is a story of romance that goes with the Fort, but you'll have to go to the show to hear about it.
We actually went to the fort twice because there was little light when we first went so we just went to the sound and light show. We went back the next day to make the climb in the daylight.
They are in the process of making a museum (which probably won't be done for a couple of years). Got to peek into the building and saw some great photos of the fort. Should be nice when it's done.
Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy the view!
Open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Admission Rs 10 for Indians, Rs 150 for foreigners
Sound & Light Show 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. Rs 50 for all
Visitor information was correct at time of writing.

"Places to stay for all budgets"
Places to stay in hyderabad :
It is little difficult to find a accomodation in good hotels as they are booked for good part of the year. Good hotels( 4-5 stars) in hyderabad are :
1) Grand kakateeya sheraton
2) taj krishna
3) Taj Banjara,
4) taj residency all the taj are in walkable distance.
5) green park
6) Viceroy
7) ramada
8) katriya -- This is a likely place to get rooms
9) Aditya park inn -- Not friendly service , but sure to get rooms
The hotel rates should not be very high in other hotels, for 2000 you should be able to find a decent accomodation. Food is not a problem in hyderabad, every place will serve decent food.
