these are a few places that I would suggest --
1.Charminar and Laad bazaar/chudi bazaar
Absolute must while going to hyderabad is a bangles shopping in Laad bazaar in the charminar area.
2.Golconda fort,dont miss the sound and light show.it is superb.check the english/hindi/telugu version timings
3.Drive through cyberabad/hitex.
4.Qutub shahi tombs - go only if your are really interested in history
5.Salar jung museum -lovely museum,largest single man's collection in the world
6.Great restraunts like --
Water front,zafraan exotica,ohris etc.-- hyderabad is a foodie's paradise
If you like hyderabadi biriyani dont miss paradise biriyani,at Paradise,Secunderabad.
7.Birla mandir -- is a marble structure ,a temple of lord balaji The sound and light show at Golconda and a drive through the city

Ohris has 3 levels and 3 different restraunt themes on every level. I reccomend the 2nd floor Far East. Go for the Quick lunch. It includes the Buffet you can't beat it.

It depends on your interests.However,these are a few places that would suggest --

I traveled to Hyderabad just to sample Andrah cuisine in the land of its birth :-) But the city is a nice (if smoggy), modern Indian metropolis. I agree with the checklist of the previous poster, but I if you are working you might be pressed fo r time, so...
If you like ancient architecture, Golconda should come as the first priority.
If you are more into people and shopping, keep in mind that Hyderabad is where fashionable Indian women go to do their wedding shopping, so hit the markets.
If you like Indian, DO NOT SKIP the food, and go out of your way to find a local place to eat a thali or a biriyani.

One thing left unexplored is the famous Guiness Book recorded Ramoji Film City but visiting to this place is a full day task and if time permits, this is really fantastic.

hyderabadi biryani
While in India, I would like to try hyderabadi biryani. I might visit the city - yes, just for the Biryani. I heard Paradise restaurant there serves good Biryani, also Azizia.
Any further word from someone who visited India and tasted the biryani ...or any local from Hyderabad here ..please share your thoughts and tips.

Paradise biryani is definetly good.Also try the biriyani at Ohris(Road no.12,banjara hills)Do try Kubbani ka meetha and double ka meetha(both sweet dishes)at Hyderabad house.Hyderabad house also has biriyani.

Try Hyderabad House www.hyderabadhouse.com...I used to eat from a franchise of this place in Bangalore every weekend and could never have enough!

Although, the famous one is Paradise (but according to me, not very delicious)only but I think you will get equally tasty Biryani at Hyderabadhouse.If you want to go off track bit into the city, try sohail's Biryani..that's really good. You will find it on the crossroad of Malekpet just besides the flyover.
*Note: Going to Sohail needs to be considered as an exclusive Biryani trip as there is nothing famous to see around.

As of Paradise, yes, I spoke to few people from Hyderabad who live close to my place here in Sydney, they all said negative things about Paradise. But they did mention that its popular among celebrities.
