cell phones in hyderbad

by rmeltz

Hello,
I'm going to be in Hyderbad for a few months this summer as part of a study abroad program. I want to purchase a cell phone both for local use and to stay in touch with relatives and friends in the U.S. Any suggestions and recommendations will be most welcome. Thank you.

There are very many choices of phones to buy in India-all good. But be aware that you HAVE to have a proof of identity (passport) and a separate passport photo with you before you can make this purchase. It is for security reasons.

Hi - the rates for phones themselves vary from very cheap to very expensive so you'll have plenty of choices. You can purchase a phone at any store and don't have to buy a plan as in most places in the US so you don't need any ID or passport photo for that. Major companies for service include Vodaphone, Airtel, and Reliance. When you sign up for service - there are shops all over to do that - you should have your passport, a photo, and an Indian address. Best to bring a copy of your front passport page (although they'll make it for you but you probably don't want anyone running off to a photocoier with your passport!).

I have Vodaphone prepaid service. Costs a few Rs a month (I don't make many local calls or send many texts). But I buy the Vodaphone prepaid US & Canada calling card - the one that costs Rs 2500 ($50). They have the best calling rates to the US at Rs 1.99/min (less than 4 cents a minute). If you buy the calling card that costs less than Rs 2500 (I think it's Rs 1000), then your per minute charge will be higher (I think almost double so don't buy that one!).

Have a great time in Hyderabad - it's a great city!

Travel Tips for Hyderabad

Old British Residency

by husain

The 200 year old British Residency, which is now the Osmania University College for Women, was built by the British `Resident' at the court of the Nizam, Major James Kirkpatrick. His effort was to build a grand structure for his accomodation, which would rival the palace of the Nizam.

very good museum

by vin1

Salarjung museum, it is near to the ols city, on the way to charminar. It has some very good collections. Do not miss the vieled rebecca, it is the star of collections there. since it is a single person collection, you can see a certain taste to art prominent.

State museum in public gardens, it is next to the state assembly. It has lil collection compared to the salarjung museum.

"Hyderabad nice place to hang out"

Well I can write a book on Hyderabad for the simple fact that I grew up in this city... I was five when my family moved there and was 22 when I left it...
The weather here is good...nowadays summers are very hot but this was not the case earlier...People are nice and warm...This is one place in India where one can expect police to help them...
Hyderabad is rich in culture and has many historic places to visit...on the other hand a lot of pubs have popped up...a few parks have also come up ...

Charminar is the major attraction...but there are other places too like Falaknuma palace, seven tombs, Golconda fort, salarjung museum, and if urwith ur family dont miss the zoo its simply awesome alsoRamoji film city is a great tourist attraction...

Its better one eats at good hotels else !@#$%...thats one big problem here and always carry bottled drinking water....Biryani is hot favourite here...

All in all a nice place to live (apart from traffic)
