House of MG: A Bit Of Luxury
We stayed at this hotel on our second visit to Ahmadamad. Having eaten in their restuarant on a previous visit, we had looked around, and really liked what we saw. Of course, a nice looking hotel is often not what it seems. But this place lived up to our expectations......and then some. It was 1st class service from the moment we checked in.
When we saw our room (s) I thought that there had been a mistake..........the room was a suite, and we asked for a regular room. No mistakes. Sumptious. A four poster bed, with fine muslin mosquito netting draped over, luxurious bathroom (shower & tub) and masses of space. We even had an extra sitting room, with a swing seat, and balcony. I was entranced by the extras...writing desk, huge tv, bookcases with books, and comfy sofas. Persion carpets completed the picture.
After settling in, we explored the premises.....indoor pool with mosaics & underwater lighting, and a gym. 2 restuarants, one outdoors in a candlelit garden area. We put them to good use, after the heat of the day.
We spent a couple of days at this hotel........I could not fault it in any way. The service was good, the food was superb, and the ambiance truly special. It was built in 1920, and had been the home of a wealthy industrialist. The present owners have turned this into one of the best hotels we have stayed in.
The reception staff were very capeable, and handled any queries & requests that we made with total professionalism. We had aksed for a late checkout.......no problem....and no extra charges. I recommend this place to anyone. Its a bit pricey, but we had stayed in hotels that had cost more, and gave no value at all.
The Indoor Pool is amazing.........lined with mosaic tiles set out in floral patterns. The four poster bed was comfortable, and hard to leave in the mornings. And most of all, the bathroom...........had fantastic lighting, lots of huge mirrors, and shower plus tub. Having an extra sitting room was also an attraction.........the swing seat was a good place to relax & read. There is a wrap around balcony, upstairs, which overlooks a fairly busy street, and a mosque right opposite. We would wake every morning to the call to prayer.
We also really liked the outdoor restaurant(The Green House).........the food is superb, & service quick & efficient.
There is an option to buy any of the furnishings in the rooms........I wouldhave loved the four poster, but thought that might be a bit difficult to fit into my hand-luggage.

Gandhi Ashram Guest House: Great Value PLUS Tranquillity
The accomodation is very basic, but very comfortable. Clean room & bedding, and a good working bathroom. The room also had a balcony, overlooking a leafy courtyard. We had stayed in rest & guest houses before, but this one was a pleasant surpise. The management were helpful, and organised transport for us when we needed it. There is also a communal dining room, with plain, healthy vegetarian meals, costing very little. All in all, good value & no hassles whatsoever.
No really unique qualities............but it is in a quiet part of Ahmadabad, opposite the Sabarmarti River & Ashram, and having the balcony was good. It was very warm, so sitting out there in the evening having a cold drink was really good. The bird life is prolific., and even monkeys were swinging around in the trees of the courtyard.

Hotel Volga: Clean, quiet and friendly
I took a chance on this place picking it out of my Lonely Planet guide (which is a couple of years old and doesn't always jive with my view of things). But what a prize it turned out to be. My room is a 'comfort' room (cheapest type - non-AC but with a very swiftly moving ceiling fan). Its only window opens on to a kind of well outside the building so it is not very bright but on the other hand it is lovely and cool (pretty important with the weather in A'bad right now - daytime highs around 35-40).
The floor is very clean (I can walk around barefoot after my shower without my feet getting dirty), each day my room is cleaned and I get a fresh towel. Cold, purified water is provided in a large capacity (2 litres?) thermos in your room and you also have a TV with more channels than you could ever need, a little roll of toilet paper given when you first arrive and a newspaper each morning. All for 450 Rs (about $10 US) a night.
Just off of Relief Road but lovely and quiet. Just round the corner from House of MG for a little more upmarket food.

Quality inn Rivera: Good place to stay!
The quality inn Rivera in Ahmadabad was a nice place to stay. I stopped there for 5 nights. Rooms were very clean and tidy and very comfortable too. The service in the rooms e.g. laundry and room service, was excellent! Restaurant did very nice food, and plenty of it to choose from. The staff did a barbecue for the guests outside in the garden one night.. that was definitely not to be missed if you get a chance to go to one there!
Prices for the laundry and room service were very good.. most of my clothes cost only a few pence to get cleaned, and you could eat very well for just a couple of pounds.
Staff downstairs in the lobby were very helpful... i changed money there, it was a couple of rupees under the exchange rate on the street though.
The gardens outside the hotel were tidy and well kept. There was a small business centre just off the lobby which i used to get on the internet a couple of times, charges were quite high compared to the cyber cafe's in the city though.
Transport is easily available from the hotel... the security guards at the front door will call you a rickshaw off the street, or there was usually a taxi waiting outside on the drive that was available.
I did have one problem while staying there, i caught one of the cleaners going through my bag. I reported it to the manager, and it was swiftly dealt with.
All in all, i could recommend this as a good place to stay if your in Ahmadabad!

always have a look at the rooms before paying;ahmadabad is a cheap city because there are few tourists;it is worth going to a *** hotel, you will pay 15$ a night and it is perfectly clean;one-star-hotels are really disgusting, but go and have a look just for the fun and the smell!
